A past trip that encouraged our up-in-coming 2024 CDT trip

Every year since my husband (@southern safaris ) and I were married we made a trip out west, mostly for camping and some trail rides.
Along the years we would find amazing places off the beaten path to ride and camp.
Just being able to enjoy the beauty that the Earth offers, untouched from the development of us
humans is something you couldn't even began to try to explain to someone,
they just have to experience first hand. Before we had our Isuzu Trooper we would take whatever vehicle we had on hand.
Having my Trooper just made enjoying the outdoors better and gave us the ability to get to more remote places.
In this post we travel from Oklahoma to Colorado.
(This will be a 4 part post since we can only post 10 photos per post)

First Stop: Mount Scott, OK

Located above Lawton Oklahoma, this beautiful mountain that overlooks a huge lake is a site to see. This mountain is one of many in the Wichita Mountain Range, with the wildlife refuge all around them. Mount Scott has a three-mile-long paved road that leads to the summit for breathtaking views of southwest Oklahoma. The peak towers at 2,464 feet above sea level.

In addition to that there is an old town called Medicine Park that has a long history as a vintage cobblestone resort town. There are little shops and restaurants in the town, but along the scenic drive is where you can see all the old historic buildings and animals. The drive is set inside the Wichita Mountain Wildlife refuge. There is a visitor center that is like a small museum of the animals that inhabit the area as well as a video that explains and shares old photos of how the refuge became what it is today. Thanks to Theodore Roosevelt we get to enjoy the beautiful views and animals all along this refuge. You can also fish and there are many many different hiking and primitive camping sites all along the huge scenic drives.

Second Stop: Clayton Lake State Park, NM

This is such a beautiful well-maintained camp. This is located at
36°34′42″N 103°18′22″W It is right on the top right corner of New Mexico. This is a great stop for anyone traveling in any type of vehicle. They have short walking trail to an overlook where there are fossilized dinosaur tracks to see, as well as information on them and the area. Seeing the dinosaur tracks are memories we will never forget. Knowing we will get to show our kids this camp site now makes finding it in the past that much more memorable.

The camp sites are set right above the lake for beautiful and peaceful views. We have been this campsite about 3 times
now and is the first stop on our trip in the September (2024), since it is right under a trail that leads us right to the CDT.
From Clayton Lake you can take all back roads and passes to the CDT(easy route) NM starting point.

The road up to CO from here is breathtaking and full of animals and little falls with streams and sites worth documenting. All away from people and traffic just enjoying the scenic drives and views that New Mexico and the southern parts of Colorado have to offer. There are antelopes, deer other beautiful wild animals along this route that give it the touch of nature feel that everyone will enjoy.

We absolutely LOVE this campsite. We have been here about 4 times and will always make time to stay here.

The camp site is called Purgatoire Campground off of Highway 12 by North Lake State Wildlife area. (The lake is absolutely beautiful as well) We have been snowed in here and there are bears, but completely worth adding to your trip. There is also Cuchara Pass right by the Spanish Peaks, E. 9995 F. Our trooper has done it dry and snow.

Stop four: Soap Creek Canyon Campground

This was a last minute find when we wanted a more remote camping site and it was a huge score between the views and the trails we got to enjoy, we ended up staying here a few more days than we intended to. Located just below Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest this is by far one of our most favorite places we have found to date.

The campsites are right by a beautiful creek that is in a valley of cliffs that are absolutely breathtaking, with beautiful pine trees that are loaded with birds and chipmunks this camp will become a favorite to anyone. To get to this campsite we had to go through washed-out and over used dirt and rocky roads, at first, we thought maybe we were getting lost but once you find you are blow away.

Once you set camp if you go back to the entrance and continue past the camp there are a couple tails that take you deeper into the forest for spectacular views and fun trails. There are some rocky inclines, muddy trails and water crossings that make for a fun adventure that you could enjoy for days.
