A.R.E. CX versus MX and other questions

I am very close to ordering a cap for my F150, but am torn between the A.R.E. CX and MX. I like the cleaner lines of the CX and the access to roof rack afforded by the slightly lower roof, but am considering the MX because it might be more functional -- extra room and, according the the ARE website, better visibility. I use my truck for hauling gear, such as ski equipment, camping gearing and hunting gear. I doubt that I would use it for sleeping as I have tents for that.

Does anyone have any experience with the MX or similar caps and views on whether the extra few inches of headroom truly adds to the cap's functionality?

I also would be interested in views on the walk-in door option that is available for both caps. It seems that it has limited funtionality and it is not worth losing the use of a tailgate. Does anyone disagree?

Finally, other than perhaps styling, are there any reasons why I should consider the Z series?

Thanks

I can't speak for the CX or MX, but I've my Z Series for 10 years. It has been and continues to be a great shell.

I'm sure the CX and MX are put together at the same quality level.

It comes down to personal preference and requirements. The extra headroom would be nice if you plan to sleep in it - otherwise, probably not needed. (How often are you going to load up the truck to the top of the shell?)

The best thing you could do is find someone (or your dealer) with the shell you want on your style truck, and climb in and see what you think. (I guess that's kind of what you are asking, huh?)

Valley Camper Sales is THE best camper source in our area(San Diego) I consulted with them a few years ago and they warned against the ARE walk- in-door if you anticipate mucho offroading. The torsional twist will wreak havoc on them. The MX with a framed rear door would be a good option. They especially recommended the Snugtop with the beefed up sides and roof option. They are a family owned biz and I was really impressed with their knowledge and sincerity.

Some sort of lost...
I'm selling the Z series on my F150, but only because I have a slide-in now.

It has been a great camper, very solid. Very clean look. I wouldn't bother with the one that is higher than the cab though, you've already got 3'8" or something under a cab high cap. Doesn't seem worth it unless you're sleeping in it.

Plus, your truck should still fit under a standard 7' garage door with a cab-high cap.

Thanks for the input.

The Valley Camper Sales suggestion brought a smile to my face. I bought a shell there for my 1979 Datsun Pickup about 30 years ago, which was my first build. I think it was about $300. (The shell, not the truck, which did not cost much more.) I put a 2 or 3 inch body lift on it, with KYB gas shocks and BFG All Terrains.

I'm leaning toward the CX without the walk-in door. As far as I can tell, the difference between the Z series and CX is the frameless side windows and rear glass.
