Academy Tents

Anyone use the cheaper Academy tents?

I'm taking my wife and two kids out for a first experience for them at primitive camping. Not wanting to drop a lot of coin I picked up a tent for 89.99 at Academy.

It's called the Dakota and I wanted the Falls Creek but nobody in town had it in stock.

So... Let me be perfectly clear... I have no idea what Academy is or what kind of gear they sell...

However, one of the classic camping mistakes is to try and go cheap on gear for the first family trip because you aren't sure if she will "like camping"...

In my opinion (and experience) you are better off to beg, borrow, or rent something good, (and know how to set it all up) before you go.

That being said, legions of happy families camp with title or no high-end gear and they seem to enjoy the outdoors whether comfortable or not... individual results may vary...

Have fun, and have a backup plan...

I think this time of the year you can get away with a cheaper tent. The weather this time of the year is usually mild. Just make sure you have a good rain fly and warm sleeping bags. Good luck and let me know how you like the academy brand tents.

Make sure you make, purchase, borrow, etc a tent footprint. Wet sleeping bags are no fun!

I think its better to get out there and experience than to wait to buy better equipment. I would seam seal the tent and you might try a product like Nix wax for some more waterproofing. No, its not as good as more expensive tents, but with a rain fly and a good floor, you will be fine.
