Add elec or hydraulic brake to M416

So I’m reading through some threads here and was thinking. Can the parking break in the stock M416 be upgraded to real brakes? Electric or hydraulic? I’m thinking that it would require an complete hub swap? Has it ever been done?

The easiest way is to replace the stock axle with an axle from Dexter that incorporates both an electric brake function using a vehicle mounted brake controller and a parking brake function using cables.

You WILL (90% sure) need to order the axle "narrow" and use wheel spacers if you want your trailer wheels to match the factory rims on your Jeeps due to hub dust cap interference with the center of the Jeep wheels.

I have the Dexter axle with electric brakes and I was trying to figure out if I could add a simple cable to the drum some how to have a parking brake.

Any info is much appreciated. If you have done it before please share.

Dexter sells a 10 "braked hub with accommodation for a parking brake. It not usually a stock item and has to be ordered.

The referenced Dexter axle with electric brakes and the cable parking brake is what I have under my Kimberly Kamper trailer. Works great. :victory:

After a little research, I figured out I would need to change the backing plate to the electric brake with parking brake feature and use the ORSHLAND cable set up.. there is no kit to convert other than an entire swap.. which I intend on doing very soon.
