The last week has been interesting on the local rivers. We had an intense heat wave which drove down water levels and skyrocketed water temps so the fish were under a lot of pressure. We were lucky to get in about 7 hours last week and brought in a dozen or so "Fall" fish under 10 inches
Most action was taken on Prince nymphs, especially with wing or tail and we found some Hydropysche net spinner caddis larva to be helpful. Mr. Mayfly himself was about and we kept a keen eye on the giant Blue Heron that shared our company
The nice thing about the low H2O levels was access. We were able to freely wander about the high oxygenated water areas without much concern for river hazards. The water temp was in the 70s and the flow rate fairly low even on the bigger rivers, and we hit some big wide open rivers.
Then it rained and the night temps dipped into the 40s/50s. A week went by and today we hit a large river. Water temp was 62 and we fished the same areas we had last week and yielded some beautiful rainbows who were very aggressive. I lost about 4 fish during today's 3 hour tour but landed a strong colorful hold over who gave me a stout game
We were fishing a few miles below a small dam. Evidently the dam opened about 3 hours into our jaunt and we were lucky to make it back across the river to the side we were parked. The rain the last few nights had been light so we really didn't anticipate a release. It rose the water level a few feet in a few minutes and debris that had been sitting idle on the bank began to flow by at high speed. It was pretty exciting
Always worth it to call ahead and check release schedules
This week we are headed farther north into less populated areas where things get really popping this time of the year. I have many pics taken on my Black Berry but I can't seem to upload them from my Apple? Plus they come out sideways for some reason? I really loath my BB lol
