Adventures with our 2025 Rivian R1S dual motor max pack

We got our Rivian at the end of September, right before our early pricing expired. The only option we added was the max pack which has a rated range of 410 miles. We picked it up in Denver and got to test out that range driving back 250 miles on I70 to Grand Junction (still had 30% left when we got home). We've had it out on a few adventures and will have many more in the future. Feel free to ask questions about it, or suggest trips in Utah or Colorado for me to test it out on!

I got to try out camp mode when hiking Mt. Massive by Leadville. It levels the vehicle using the air springs and you can keep the climate control running during the night. I'm 6'6" and I'm able to lay down in the back with the second and third rows down, which is awesome. It got below freezing and I had the temp set to 60 overnight, which used 8% of the battery. There's a couple rough spots getting to the north half moon creek trailhead so I got to test that clearance.

With one (not very) fast charging location in Leadville I charged while getting a post hike pizza and then had plenty of range to get home again.

We took our trailer to Ridgway state park (about 90 miles) and towing is so effortless. Our trailer is 22' and about 5000 lbs and you can barely feel there's a trailer attached. We went to the top of owl creek pass to do some hiking and see the colors as well. I used an adapter for the tt-30 outlet to charge at 24 amps/120 volts which is slow, but enough to get enough charge to get home again without a charging stop.

I picked up 5 dodge ram 20" wheels that others have found will clear the large front brake calipers and some 275/60r20 all-terrain tires, which is fortunately a common size on full size trucks and matches the stock 22" wheel tire diameter. I'll keep the all-season set for longer road trips.

My son and I went to Telluride to do the via ferrata route, and it was a blast! (If you're not afraid of heights!) We went over last dollar road on the way home which is a mild 4x4 route but a bit chewed up from people driving it when it was muddy, and there was a bit of snow in the woods after the top of the pass. Still had 15% charge left after about 300 miles which was nice.

Our last family camping trip of the year was to Green River state park, and then a hike into Horseshoe canyon, part of canyonlands national park. It was a 100 mile tow each way, and again towing, especially up and down step grades, is so easy you hardly realize there are hills. The campground has 50 amp 240v outlets so it was no problem to get charged up again overnight. Horseshoe canyon is almost 50 miles of gravel/dirt road each way but not at all technical.

I built a hitch mounted spare tire carrier using a hitch extension and some other parts I had laying around. I used the hitch extension so I can still add a rear bike rack when needed. The tire folds down just enough to allow the rear hatch and tailgate to open.

Something that I think people will be interested in, and surprised me, is that my payload rating is over 1800 lbs (1819 lbs). I guess that shows that the gen2 rivian has quite a bit of weight savings. It's nice to have a good buffer even when the whole family is along with all the gear.

I wanted to show some of the gear I take along and how it fits in the frunk. There is a false floor, below which I have the portable charger and adapters, a tall bottle jack and jack pucks (for the jack points), a snatch strap and heavy duty ratchet strap, and (two) portable compressors. Above the false floor there are two small storage pockets that have some ratchet straps and soft shackles, tire plug kit and jump pack. A 4' hi-lift (actually Jack-All brand from Canada) fits across the frunk and I have a comealong, tire chains, shovel, bag of misc gear, and plenty of space left over for more gear.

In the back below the floor is another space designed for a compact spare, but we use it for more storage. Currently there is just a bag with emergency gear in the space.


Charging equipment consists of the mobile charger with the two plugs it comes with, tesla destination charger and supercharger adapters, adapters for the common dryer plugs and welding plug, tt-30 (30 amp rv) adapter, neutral- ground bonding plug for a generator if necessary, and a long extension cord which I'm going to split in half and change the plugs on, as I've used it for my welder in the past.

Awesome! Being able to run climate control without an idling motor is a huge benefit that I didn't think would be a big deal but it really is, camping in cold weather and taking the edge off is nice.

We did a day trip to Moab on Saturday to ride mtb with the kids at dead horse point state park, and drove Long Canyon up from the river. I'm really pleased with the smooth accelerator control (trying to be careful with the huge bike rack on back). The bikes add a lot of wind drag on the interstate so I had to back down my speed on the way home.
