Air Box

While cleaning my throttle body and mass air flow sensor, I noticed that my stock air box has broken and flopping around. I just priced a new one and they're about $340! I priced a K&N cold air intake kit at $275. I know most people around here do not like the cold air kits but what do you think I should do?

be careful of smog...

Being in California, be careful... You won't pass smog without a 'cold-air intake' that is smog exempt. It needs a special CO number that most intakes do not have. It has to be C.A.R.B. exempt. I am dealing with it right now. My BMW has a K&N cold-air intake that I have had for years and then this year, I can't pass smog without changing it. I had to buy an original airbox on ebay to install it for smog. Pain in the rear...

I would just try to band-aid it until you are able to find a good deal on a used airbox. But that's just me, I am sure alot of people haven't had any problems with their k&n.

For me, if I was in your position, I would get a stock airbox, because I drive on alot of dirt roads, and I don't like sucking alot of dirt in. It just seems like to me the K&N is so unprotected from dirt. you should be able to find a stock airbox for 50 bucks or so.

Epoxy your stock box, or watch various forums, they pop up for around $40-50...I know from experience :(.

At that price, get a snorkel - (I know it works with the stock airbox)
x2 on used, TTORA, Custom Tacos (shiver), Craigslist.

RE: cleaning sensor (not directed to you CA-RJ), spray away with cleaner, just don't touch the filament...

CA-RJ -

One of the mounting tabs on mine was broke last week, I just used some JB weld and its holding up fine.

Also something to consider. The 96-98 MAF is about $600 new (IIRC) to replace when it goes south. The 99+ MAF is less than $150 new. Additionally the later model has been trumped up as "far less restrictive" since it isn't much bigger than a pencil...YMMV. To swap into the 99+ MAF you will need an airbox from a 99+ vehicle (the outlet necks are completely different), and from there it is a simple re-pin of 4 of the 5 wires on the MAF plug. So what I'm getting at - is if you're replacing your airbox and $$ permits you might consider swapping to the later model year airbox & MAF. I got a new airbox from a guy on Yotatech for around $40, and picked the MAF up at the dealer. There are online writeups for the wiring that I can point you to if needed.

And CRC electronics cleaner is fine for cleaning the MAF, and a bit cheaper than actual MAF cleaner.

I've always used the MAF sensor cleaner. Other than the obvious "to make more money" answer, any idea why CRC would bother to make two seperate cleaners if the one works fine?
I always assumed that electronics cleaner left a residue that affected the reading of the MAF sensor.

I can make no factual claim as to why there is a separate MAF cleaner. I have a lot of assumptions but I'll keep them to myself as there are enough of those on the internet already. I can only state from experience over 100k miles that regular electronics cleaner works. Why would it leave a residue? That negates the purpose.

Throw a post on ttora.com and see if someone has a stock one laying around~

Thanks for all of the responses. Today on the way to work the CEL came on. The engine is running fine, but I'll plug my Scan Gauge in and see what code it's putting out. Hopefully it's not the MAF.
