I've seen only steel bumpers used...only aluminum I've seen used is on skid plates. The general consensus is that steel protects much better in on trail collisions.
I think the only reason to have an Al bumper would be for desert racing. For other off-roading you would want steel for its strength when you're using bumper-mounted recovery points
