Alternative RTT idea

I was running around Bass Pro today and ran across the ice fishing shelters. They are basically tents that fold into plastic cases. They have their own internal frames and the larger ones were roughly 6ftx4ftx4.5 to 5ft tall when opened. When closed their footprint was pretty close to that of some of the larger RTTs I have seen. All of this folds up into a sealed case with it's own built in frame.

Looking at these really put the wheels in my head to spinning. I could buy one of these and build a frame under it to mount it up. Definitely could be workeable.

I don't see the one I was looking at yesterday on the website. I actually laid down in it and there was enough room for me and the wife easily. It was around $200. The roof was pitched.

Granted a RTT is pretty much out of the question for us with 2 kiddos.
Plus I am in the process of rebuilding the grand wag, and the new build is going to shorten the roof about 2 feet, but it will lengthen my wheelbase about 18 inches....

My RTT fabric is slowly comming apart and needs replacing,
the original vendor will not sell me just a top, and nor will the other suppliers..

So I'm juggling the sewing machine and some new fabric........or getting a standard tent to fit.......as per you are considering

here's one that almost fits my base exactly..... rectangular base, the base of the tent is within 2 inches of my aluminum base size, I would then just need
a hoop or similar for the Fly at the front on the tent...

Anyone have one of these ? that they could check some measurements on ?

I have an older model (Circa 2000 or so) of the same tent but it looks very similar. What do you want to know?

This tent might be the right size but I seriously doubt it would work as a RTT for several reasons:

There is a lot of tension in the pole sleeves and it would be really hard to pitch the tent when the whole thing is anchored square on the roof. You'd probably have to pitch it at ground level then throw it up onto the platform.

The nylon rain fly got mildew when I packed it wet for just a day while driving home at the end of a trip.

As a ground tent its designed to be stable in really bad weather so its quite low profile and there's not much headroom.

Cheers,
Graham

I have a local canvas guy that does a lot of boat covers and such. They have done a lot of custom stuff for me over the years when I was working on motorhomes. I would be willing to bet they could make a new tent. Odds are that you probably have someone local that can hook you up

Ineed a cover for my hannibal badly and I found a guy (boat canvas type). I asked what material he would recommend and if he could build me a new cover just like the old one. So I pulled all the staples out and took the old cover to him and in 3 days ha had a new cover made out of similar heavy duty rip stop waterproof pvc type material zippers, tie down holes and all for $110. I;m sure if you took them your old tent they could make one that is someone close to you.

What RTT do you have and what size is the base?

Mines a Mare from venezuela.....

and its an odd size 1500mm wide X 2200mm long when open, a sort of cuddly three people.

or two adults and the dog...for us

Martyn, you already looked at this for me...

So far I've found MIlspec waterproof material for $ 12.50 a yard 60" wide
and the wife has a sewing machine....

I'm yet to ask around at local upholsterer's or similar here in bakersfield
