Alternatives to regearing?

Just wondering what the alternatives are to regearing that any of you have tried or researched. I am running 32" BFG KM2s right now, considering 33s later this year, and feel that I don't need to regear with the 4.0 manual transmission. However, 1st gear in 4low is awfully fast for some of the rocky trails and I don't like how much I am riding the brakes and clutch.

I really like the idea of a crawl box, but they look fairly complicated to install and extremely expensive. Does anyone make a simple crawlbos that would just split my 1st gear in half when I am in 4low? Other options?

You should be thinking of two different things here - you re-gear your diffs to suit highway rpm/power band with your chosen tire size, and you address off-road gearing changes in the transfer case.

Depends on which box you choose, but it can be done by the home mechanic. Putting in an Inchworm "Lefty" for example is only a little more difficult than changing out a clutch.

Expensive is relative I guess. I put a "Lefty" in my FJC for less than $2000 all in by buying it on sale and doing all my own work. Well worth it to me, for the kind of trails I like to do.

If you go far enough afield (and increase your budget) you could have lots of gearing options in an Atlas case, but the standard Lefty configuration is a 4.7:1 low-range 1st gear, which is close to half of the stock FJC/Tacoma transfer case.
