Aluminium Sheet thickness question

Anyone know about ali sheet sizes etc. I'm going to be buying some to line the back of my discovery (floor, rear door etc) plus I'm taking out some of the original dash and using ali sheet in it's place. What is a good guage to go for - I found some .063" sheeting advertized at pretty short money - just can't figure out if this is going to be thick enough.

TIA

Most places refer to Aluminum sheet by thickness measurement instead of gage.

.063 is good for panels and secondary structural stuff. It's easy to work with too. I made the interior panels on my buggy out of .080 and it was too thick to cut with snips or bend with sheetmetal pliers. A thin metal blade in the jigsaw worked great to cut it and I just used a break or hammer & dolly set to bend it.

Thanks - looks as though I'll be gainfully employed next weekend doing some more work on the rig :safari-rig:

Hello Jeff:

I'm not sure what gauge or thickness would be best for you, but I've had great luck with the information and customer service at:

www.onlinemetals.com

They have lots of information available as well as competitive prices.

Jeff,
I fabricated this from .063 Aluminum. It's a good thickness for that use; it's sturdy but not difficult to cut or shape.

Thanks Mike - that's pretty much exactly what I'm going to be doing for the rear door on my Disco

Then I'm going to be adding a treadplate rear floor, block up the rear side windows, add some aluminium racks and take out the rear A/C
