I wounder what is your thinking about the use of the annex on trips of 1 or 2 nights , the point of an rtt other that sleeping off the ground is how fast they are to set up and take down isn't ?, i would like to pull the plug on one but still havent decided between which model is best for me ,i think they all include the annex but there's one with an overhang and a huge annex big enough to fit extra people in case is needed , i usually go out by myself and sometimes with my 8 year old son and 17 year old knephew ... So , for those rtt owners outhere , do you use it or not ?

Yep I use it whenever its not just me and the wife. Does add a couple minutes, but once you have done it a couple times its pretty quick to do (Mine is a CVT).

But with 2 100lb dogs and the kid they get their own room.

We use ours everytime we set it up for a few reasons. First it's nice to have a "changing room" where you don't have to be crouched down in the tent (i'm 6' 3") to change out clothes, especially if they're muddy, etc. It's also nice to have a place to put gear other than in the vehicle. We have 2 Rhodesian Ridgebacks and they are quite happy sleeping in the annex. We have been on a couple of overnights where the bugs were so bad after dark that we cooked and ate in there as well. It also acts as a sort of "air lock" for bugs etc as when you open the door to the tent you aren't really opening it to the outside. We have a Tepui Autana and it takes an extra 10 minutes tops to put the annex on or take it off when taking down the tent. They claim you can fit a queen sized air mattress down there so you could fit two other people comfortably in there, that's like doubling the tent's capacity! Also it can be zipped open to the vehicle if wanted so you could always extend your SUV's interior into the tent's annex if needed. I'm building our trailer now and the rack height is sized to be able to have the annex fit under the tent. I can't imagine using our tent without it so I say get one with it and only put it on when you feel you need it.

When I had my box trailer, I used it nearly every time. The changing clothes, bugs and extra room make it worth it. Mine if I remember was just two fiberglass struts and a zipper, some stakes if you needed them. The wife liked it for the privacy. I really do not think you can go wrong by having one.

we use ours every time too when it's more than just me and the wife. For all the reasons already mentioned.

I am interested in the same two tents. Originally planned on mounting the tent low so was not interested in the annex. The more I look at it the more I think I would like to mount the tent higher so I could the annex. If I plan on using the annex then I think I would like the Mt. Shasta better as the annex on that one encloses around the ladder. Decisions, decisions!

Just my late 2 cents to this. I have an ARB on a trailer and even went to the trouble of cutting down the annex to make it fit height-wise. Like all have mentioned, it is easy to set up and a big plus for changing, dogs, sitting out of the rain, etc.

Right now there is a CVT group buy somewhere on here and if I were doing it again, that would be my choice if for no other reason then cost. I have seen them at OX and they are great.

Here's an even later 2 cents, but from another point of view. We bought an Oz Tent to serve the purpose of the extra space with something that sets up quickly. Our RTT is on a trailer and not high enough to work with an annex. We only deploy it when the weather conditions warrant.
