another newb - tiedown's in a 60?

Hi, great forum. I've been lurking for a year, guess it's time to post. I know a bunch of yall from mud, but here's my intro. (Newb intros always seem lame to me)

I'm leaving in 5 weeks for my first big "expedition" trip. My Dad and I are going to Cruise Moab from MS. I'll spend Monday - Thursday before CM on the Kokopelli and Beef Basin trails along with a buddy from Denver. Thursday - Saturday doing CM, then back home.

I don't want to build a rear storage system. Has anyone come up with a good solution for tying down gear in the back for a trip like this? I'll be carrying most of the light stuff up top, with food/water, kitchen and fuel in the rear. I'll have 3 6gal cans of water, and 2 6gal cans of fuel to tie down. I thought of just drilling some hole in the floor and bolting some tie downs in there.

I'm going to suggest this product from Bloomfield Mfg., the maker of the Hi-Lift Jack.

The Slide-N-Lock system is very stout and comes in several different lengths too.

For bouncing around CruiseMoab, you should seriously consider storing fuel outside the vehicle on your rack. One leaky can and you'll be miserable for the rest of the trip. Inside the vehicle would be the last place I would want to store fuel.

Sounds like a nice 62, one of my favorite LC's. The Slide-N-Lock is a great suggestion. Hope you have a fun Cruise Moab trip! :smiley_drive:

I havn't seen those slide locks before. I really like the idea. I'm going to look at my truck this PM and see if I can easily get to the underneath of the floor pan to bolt those in. I plan on doing a 38 gallon tank in the next year, the slide locks may need to wait till then. Maybe I could use the shorter ones in the middle of the truck in front of the tank. Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm concerned about too much weight in the roof rack. I'll be using a buddies cans which I plan on testing this weekend for fuel-tightness. If they leak when I test them I was thinking of getting some Scepter cans. I've heard they are reliable not to leak.

I saw Beef Basin on your route and was about to say "snow" and then I saw you're going in April . We're snowed out of the area at the moment or we'd be going that route next week .

Have you looked at the D-ring tiedowns available from Polyperformance? Not better necessarily than the Slide-n-Lock, just different.

Hey Greg,
Sounds like a great trip coming up. My tranny from Rodney is running sooo smooth. Thanks for the help with the project. I'd put the can's outside, nothing worse than the truck smelling like gas for several days. Good luck!:smiley_drive:

One idea is to remove the rear seats and use that space for cargo. Keeps the mass centered and low. I like the slide/lock system too, but I use some simple round eyebolts. Just drilled holes in the floor, and use rachet straps. Rubbermaid Action-Packers are geat as containers.
