Hi,

I am new to the forum here, but have followed for a little bit. I have been thinking for some time about building up an expedition vehicle primarily to go snowboarding with in the wintertime.

(sorry about the width - not sure how to change it.)
More information is available here: powexplorer.com :smiley_drive:

Also, I am looking for information on a camper I recently picked up for the vehichle - it is a Kamp King Koach built by McNamee. I recently pulled it out of an old famers barn and it is in 'as new' condition from, get this, 1965.

Things are getting pretty Mad Max around here.

I am looking for any info on Kamp Kings or McNamee

as well as any feedback to help the build.

I've had several older wood framed campers like yours and got a lot of use out of them. The older styling is pretty cool.

What do you have in mind in regards to expedition use? Not sure how much bouncing around the old campers can take. I'd be afraid the tie downs would yank out of the camper frame. If you're just driving to a ski area parking lot, no issues!

BTW...welcome!

Primarily going to be on paved roads as where I go, where the pavement ends the snow usually begins and that's when the snowmobiles come out! My plans so far are to explore some areas closer to home in Idaho, check out MT and NV mountains, then take it on my annual trip to AK - for the reason you mentioned I am thinking about ferrying it up there - while the roads in AK are often better than the lower 48, the 250 miles of Destruction Bay (aptly named, 250 miles of 6" deep frost heaves) could have that thing broken down to a pile of matchsticks!

A pop up camper (Like a 4Wheel) would be a great idea since they can handle much more abuse than wood framed campers. It doesn't sound like you have too much abuse planned for your present camper, so just use the heck out of it for now! Does it have a heater?

One thing I should mention (from experience) If you get a bunch of snow piling up on the truck/ camper....get up on the roof and clear off the snow before you hit the road. Years ago, I had a huge pile of snow fall off the camper roof onto the hood blocking the windshield while I was driving canyon roads in Sequoia Nat'l Park. I opened the DS window long enough to get pulled over to clear the windshield......scary!

The front of that camper is going to be horrible for snow build up.

What has the camper got for appliances?

About the camper

A little more research revealed that the Kamp King was the first to use a laminated sandwich construction on the walls.

Also dug this up...

Pretty cool.

It has a 20k heater, 3 burner stove, range and fridge for appliances.
Also came with all of the original paperwork on appliances - pretty cool reading that stuff.
