Any try and use a mil-surp silk parachute as an awning?

So me being be, I dig military surplus stuff because of good prices and they tend to be fairly rugged.

I ran across some parachutes and thought that the would make a decent awning provided good support was used.

Yeah, I know awnings can be ready bought, but like I said, I really enjoy working with surplus stuff. I think it would be pretty cool.

I've done it for decades. The one I have now is dark blue cotton. More shade and cooler underneath than a white silk. Nice to have an awning all around in every direction to keep sun off all the windows.

I toss it over the whole campervan and rig lines to wherever to stretch it out, preferably trees. Well, I did...haven't used it since I installed solar on the van.

I was touring the backcountry one night looking for my friends when I came across a group that was using a HUGE military surplus parachute over their fire.

It was raining and the heat from the fire kept the chute filled high above them covering them from the rain.

I didn’t stop in but I have no idea how they got that set up. If it were me I’d have burned half the ropes and melted a dozen holes in things I’m sure. Pretty cool though.
