Are snorkels noisy

I've done 50k miles with my AEV snorkle with pre-filter, I have never heard it once. Even with the passenger window down, it doesn't make any noise.

I was curious when I first got it - with the stock 3.8 V6 there is no "engine induction" noise at all - even when revving the engine you can't hear it from the air intake of the snorkel.

My JK has one. Wind noise really wasn't an issue, it did make extra intake noise though. It never bothered me though

I had a snorkel on my LR3, you could hear the intake noise, but never any wind noise.

I have one on my 110, which, like the Jeep above, sounds like an angry school bus full of felons going down the road.

So no, I don’t hear the snorkel.

I DO hear when the bearings in the R380 fry on fifth gear and I have to drive from Maine to Connecticut in fourth gear...

I also had one with a pre-cleaner on my series in Africa and I didn’t hear that either.

I'll probably get some flack for this but I think the more important question is 'Are snorkels necessary?' I mean, yeah, they look all overlandy if completing a look is how you define overland, but how many of us use them? .02%? OK, maybe .03%? Just another fad IMO like those exterior mounted axes and shovels, which make a really accessible tool for a thief to bust out a window with and steal your radio. Just sayin'......

The primary use for a snorkel is for dust control and minimizing it from getting sucked into the intake. IMHO cool air in take is the second reason. So if you travel with more than one vehicle on dusty roads they can be a valuable addition

Everyone has their own needs, personally I think you'd be insane to drive West Africa without a snorkel - for both dust and water.

I also wouldn't venture far off the roads in Yukon/Alaska without one, the arctic tundra gets deceivingly deep.

As for the shovel/axe - that's why you lock it on there :)

As has been said, snorkels are more for dust, although I get asked how deep I can go in water pretty often (when it’s on the road).

I also ran a pre-cleaner in Africa. One other person in our convoy was running one and I dumped out about 1/2 cup of dirt each evening- dirt that would have otherwise went right into the oil bath.

One other bit on snorkels, wind (original topic) and water - snorkels such as the AEV, while some consider obtrusive, don't lower the water line. With the AEV, the low point in the system remains the bottom of the air box. If properly installed it will be sealed. With other styles, especially those that snake through the fender, they lower the water line. Even when sealed they still seem to get water into the system way below the hood seam

@dan and Jim, you two both mentioned Africa, which means you're the .02-.03% I was talking about that might actually need them. I'm not hating on snorkels, just on the fads and silly mods most mall cruisers go for first. Also, i have mounted recovery gear on the outside of a few of my vehicles over the years but I always lock it, and most don't, which always blows my mind. In many parts of the world that's says "hey, not only do I have a cool rig I've spent a lot of money on, but here's you a big weapon to break in to it with. Please go right ahead!"

@ratled, good info sir. Thanks

Another place you'd be insane to venture without a snorkel.... the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.

Didn't find the Jeresy Devil or any lost crazy Chechen interior decorators, but I did find that I needed a new engine after my last visit.

I have a snorkel now, just haven't had the time to mount it. I can live with the looks and the smartass comments from the uninformed as long as it keeps me away from another engine swap.

The silt and dust in Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah is a major factor in why I am adding the AEV Snorkel with the pre-filter. It gets into everything! I am tired of changing out air filters every trip and I'm not of fan of the K&N unusable filters. Of course, it would have also given a bit of piece of mind on the Mojave river crossing in my avatar!
