I'm sure folks are familiar with the acronym:

Here is a scary-as-hell crash on a F800GS that ended up totalling the bike. I guess this may be an issue with the F800GS that people certainly may want to look into. The issue for me is a lot of the off road clothing like Klim does not have adequate padding for something like this. This guy was basically able to walk away: http://vimeo.com/21223833

Complete thread about it here:

With moto it seems like there are different variations in styles and bikes and riding. Once evolving more towards the lighter bikes it is a little harder to justify the clothing and jackets with padding at these levels. Or at least I thought so...

A decent pair of riding pants cost in the neighborhood of $200. Is that too much? Will that $200 pair of riding pants reduce your medical bills by $200 when you crash? Will it save you $200 worth of pain and suffering? Every rider has to answer that question for him/herself.

As for a lot of the riding gear that is oriented to off road riding -- you are right, it doesn't include padding. Personally, I rely on my Klim gear for abrasion resistance only. I wear [3rd party] pads/guards under it. But then again, when a pair of Klim Dakar pants only cost $50, you can't expect 100% protection.

BTW, pretty much any motorcycle that uses dual front rotors presents a similar hazard with the cross over brake line - and you're right, riders of those bikes would be well advised to consider the potential.

I have to admit that I've gotten lazy my last few rides to work and have not been wearing my protective pants. When it started warming up it was just too much to bear with my slacks and the overpants on, not to mention they are not the most stylish things. I guess its time to start thinking about an alternative....

Thanks for the reminder. :Wow1:

I catch myself doing the same thing. The mesh overpants aren't too bad on the way in to work, but they get kinda toasty on the way home.

To remind yourself of the alternative, just cruise through the Face Plant section of ADV . . . :snorkel:

Yup. "Face plant" is a good reminder that we are not in control of the world.

For me it is Aerostich in the winter and Motoport in the summer. This gives me the range to be sufficiently comfortable from about 30F to 96F.

what are these out of curiosity...

I'd guess he's talking about something like this.

I have a couple different pairs of knee/shin guards (along with Sidi boots), and an Acerbis Koerta 'pressure' suit, but I'm lacking in hip padding (unless you count the the padding that years of carne asada and sonoran dogs have given me :sombrero:).

If I'm on decent roads (dirt roads), I tend to wear more street oriented gear - BMW Rally-pro II, Olympia Airglide II, etc (some combination of jackets/pants), rather than the pressure suit/etc.

Cool.. My program currently is a decent jacket and I'll be purchasing a pressure suit shortly for the warmer days. I have a padded pants set and a set of Klim Mohaves for warm days. I can imagine padding will get super uncomfortable on bare skin, to your point earlier GoodTimes...

a great place for hip padding at a nice price is hockey shorts. they are not made to take abrasion of going down by themselves but are really nicely made for something UNDER good pants.
