Honestly, I think in some situations, the iPhone 5 takes better photos than my Canon point and shoot from a few years ago.
To be fair, by "a few" I mean probably around 4.

More examples that show, sometimes and against all reason, iPhone photos can look great.

I'm not at all surprised with great photos coming from an iPhone, the sensors have gotten really good, the lenses are sharp, there are apps that let you do everything from controlling focus and exposure, to editing and creating. My iPhone is my everyday camera. It's easy, it's accessible, it's powerful, and it's fun. And honestly as good and as powerful as many of the apps for the iPhone are, I don't believe you need them to take great photos with the phone, because at the end of the day a great photo is still about light and content, something almost every camera made nowadays can capture well.

I've had good luck with the iPhone. I like the panorama feature and the hdr sometimes helps make a good photo.
