Most likely made out of 1531 forged steel. They has issues with the front shafts, they were light around the U joint bore and were breaking there. Superior axle makes an excellent replacement front and rear if you are having issues.

front or rear axles ?

The fronts have a Dana 35 u-joint which are problematic with all the lockers turned on and turning with good traction. The rear has issues with the limited slip and the spider gears. (a front unit fits in the rear and is stronger with out the slipper)

There is debate that the stock axles will twist a little before breaking unlike an after market alloy but I never had they sort of joy and changed to 60's (over kill).

Stock wheels and remember to unlock the front and you should not have too much hassle other that some u-joints. maintenance is also key

Dana 35 is a rear axle. You probably mean Dana 30.

To the OP, Rubicon Dana 44's aren't true dana 44's They are much like Dana 30's in a stock LJ/TJ/XJ with a dana 44 centersection(pumpkin) and inner axle shafts. As far as I know they use Dana 30 tubes, knuckles, brakes, outer shafts and hubs.

I pulled the rear axle shafts out of a 04 rubicon tonight b/c of a leaking oil seal. When I grabbed the bearings they seemed to have a lot of play and I could move them on the shaft. Is this nomal? Are the bearings pressed on or just the retainer ring? I think it was run with low gear oil for a while so I'm not taking any chance with these bearings and will have new ones pressed on tommorrow but I've never seen bearings fit this loosely?
