Backup camera relocation ?

Well apparently I didn't use as much thought in this mod as some of the others, in fact I know I didn't. I upgrade the head unit in my 02 4runner to allow the use of multiple video inputs. Mainly an interior night vsion camera to keep an eye on my new little one. The head unit had a seperate line in for a backup camera and I ordered bth cameras together. I mounted the backup camera in the bumper (dead center) and now I've found anytime I use my bike rack or tow my trailer I cant see a damn thing. With minimal modification where should I relocate it? Higher is likely better and the only thing that comes t mind is the rear air foil wing thing, some slanted trim rings will be needed to get a downward angle or adjustment. Thoughts?

The OE backup camera on my 2008 Lexus RX is in the recess for the license plate light on the tailgate. This seems to work pretty well -- fairly good field of view of the big area behind the vehicle, and a slight downward look toward the bumper so I can back up to within less than an inch of something without hitting it.

I put my camera (Eclipse head unit) up on the upper tail gate where it's not obstructed by my swing-out tire carrier. Which camera are you using? Is it the bullet shaped ones or the ones with a little bracket?

The darn thing is pretty big and long. The tail gate idea is out as it would interfere with the rear sliding window on the 4Runner (not an issue on the RX).

On that note if I ever got a rear bumper I could mount it to the swing out in the center of the Tire carrier as I have seen b4. The bumper will likely be thick and a PIA to drill but ahhh what ever.

Time for camera relocation, I need to source an OE type unit but feel I might lose some performance from the IR capabilities I currently have. Thoughts?

You got a high level brake light....?

I spent some time drilling and filing mine and ended up with a neat instal.

I like the idea of the location of the camera... Do you have How-To on how did you install it? I would also like to do the same thing. :D
