Bed Liner on Fuel Cans?

I have both Scepter plastic and Wecdo NATO type fuel cans. We've been using the Scepters for the last couple years but recently I decided to give the the Wedcos some use and testing. One advantage to the Wedcos is that the filler nozzle is easy for me to carry in the ammo can on my spare tire carrier. I also like that the Wedcos don't swell/expand like the Scepters, which have actually bent/swollen the AT can carrier on the rear of my 4Runner.

But the paint on metal fuel cans eventually gets scraped and chipped and rust is a concern in the long run. What about having the cans sprayed with a bed liner material like Rhino Liner? Any obvious negatives?

I would think that the bed liner would keep the cans quieter and greatly reduce the chance of rust. I would think the caps couldn't be sprayed and a dark color (like black) may make the cans get too hot.

Other ideas or concerns?

If my Compact Flash card reader was not broken I would post up pics of my swollen metal Wedco can and the other one that basically imploded on itself. Even Wedco cans are subject to weird shape changes. I think I had some pressure and temp changes that caused my cans to misshapen. Granted not as extreme as a Scepter, but enough for me to worry.

Personally, I don't think I would really want to put anything like LineX on gas cans. No scientific reason, just seems like it could be a bad thing.

I have two NATO cans that are painted with Herculiner. Have been carrying them all over Arizona and Baja for at least five years. I lay them on their sides on a piece of rubber matting and strap them down with a rachet strap. Have never had any problems, or leaks. Picture below is from Baja during 2006 B1K race. The liner is like hard rubber and protects them well, plus they don't look like gas cans the way I carry them, and air resistance is minimized. Did not paint the very top (handle and spout).

My concern with all of the plastic liner products is that when they do get nicked it can allow water behind the coating. Then the coating could work against you by concealing rust.

That's just the type of testimonial I was hoping for :)

Certainly a concern or possible, but it is virtually guaranteed that the regular paint will wear off and invite rust.
