So I have been a lurker for a while. Love this site, tons of information, great vehicles, and positive write-ups without the bashing that goes on at other sites. I have been building my truck slowly and have decided to upgrade wheels and tire for my own specific purposes. I'm going to use 285x 70 x 17 inch Goodyear Wrangler MTR's (Kevlar) and wondered if anyone has a good recommendation for wheels that may be running a similar setup. I have done my research and have two quick questions.
1) I am currently eyeballing SCS Stealth 6 wheels in matt black since they are hub centric in the 17 x 8.5 size. Unfortunately they are on back order for the next 60 to 90 days (I can wait but wonder if there are others available). Does anyone have a good recommendations for a similar wheel that is strong; balance's well, is hub centric, has the correct backspacing, and does not look like a bling machine, in other words a simple cost effective matt or satin black wheel that looks good and functions even better?
2) I want the tires and wheels to fit correctly in comparison the roller skating look that you see so often. I have sway- away 2.5 inch race runner coil-overs in the front with OME Dakar HD springs in the back so clearance is not an issue.
The only other tire consideration for replacement tires were the Goodyear Dura tracks in the same size and load rating. Personally the stronger tire and Kevlar did it for me. I have a friend who swears by them after similar experiences and is happy with them in comparison to the BFG AT's, Toyo MT's and BFG MT's. He likes them in the mud, snow, dirt, and on the highway. (Sherriff, daily driver, patrol rig).
Has anyone had the MTR's and switched to Dura tracks? If so why? I have heard that they are prone to flats and rolling in the side walls? I'm not happy with my current BFG AT’s; they hold rocks and throw them out in front of the truck resulting in throwback rock chips to the windshield. They also roll more in the side walls during turns on the highway. I had and disliked the Toyo MT's (too heavy/too stiff) my personal experience only, no harm intended.
If you have Dura tracks in this size, how do you find the side walls in comparison to AT's etc.? I have heard that they roll more than the BFG At's? I’m also looking at D rated tires only since they seem to be a perfect match for the Taco's. Currently running stock TRD alloys with 265x75x16” BFG AT’s, ok but jut want a little larger and more aggressive tire.
So any thoughts / feedback based upon similar experiences would be good and highly appreciated. By the way, it is my daily driver and rain, snow, mud, sand, rocks and fire trails are the paths chosen.
Thanks for your time and feedback… Cheers… Get out there…
