Best current option for LC80 integrated rear aux. fuel tank?

I want to put a rear fuel tank in on my 80. I have an LC100 rear aux. tank that I'm struggling with how to put in the 2004. Would this be a "doable" solution for the 80? It doesn't hold that much.

What are my BEST options. What solution would yo go with? What dual-filler neck is presently good/available?

Bonus question, does someone know if there are still emissions issues with the dual-filler necks in high-control emissions areas (in which I live and must be regulated).

Thanks,

I have a 40 gallon tank on my 80 series. Got it from Paul at Equipt http://www.equipt1.com/ I'm pretty sure it was made by Front Runner.

Overall, I like it. It came with a dual filler neck as part of the kit, along with a fuel pump, switch, etc. It really extends the range of the 80, which had a pretty meager range with the stock tank.

There are two things I don't like about it. The first is that it doesn't have a fuel gauge for the aux tank. I kind of have to guess/remember how much fuel is in the aux tank. I wish I had installed a fuel gauge when I was getting the tank installed. The other thing I don't like about it is the gas cap. The gas cap that came with the tank kit is a non-venting cap. It screws down tight with an airtight rubber gasket. This created some pretty major pressure differentials between the outside air and the pressure in the tank. I've looked without success for an aftermarket gas cap that fits. Finally, I cut away a small piece of the rubber gasket to make it slightly less than completely airtight. Much less pressure difference now.

Regarding emissions, the OEM plunger type dual filler would be the one to get. Our smog testing around here requires vehicles to have the leaded gas restrictor on the filler. If the dual filler doesn't have it, you can install an aftermarket restrictor. Adventureduo found a manufacturer for these and posted on mud.

You will also need to retain the non-vented fuel cap. Generally, OBDII vehicles will throw a code if the cap or fuel system is venting. Techs around here also test the cap individually for a good seal and pressure test the fuel system if pre OBD2.

I had this problem on an old VW diesel pickup I once owned. The pressure was so tight the fuel tank imploded!
After I replaced the tank, I drilled a small hole in the gas cap, no more pressure issues.

I was out at MAF a few months ago and mentioned that the idea of a bigger tank interested me but the hangdown issue and the price were the big turnoffs. The sales guys then tells me that they have some used ones in the rafters, which were factory options in Oz. MAF had them sitting in the warehouse forever. Long story short, I bought 3 of them, with pickup tubes for $200 each. They are 13 gallon tanks.

Then went down the road to Spector. Guy just happens to have 3 dual filler necks from Oz sitting in the rafters. It was a very good day.

Pump from Kragen, some fuel line and a cheapy switch and I am in business.

Its not a work of art but the tank fits snugly above where the spare tire would be, protected by the upper spare tire hanger as a skid.

I don't seem to have any emissions issues. I do get an incredible vacuum seal after I've been on the road a long time and used both tanks but that is about it.

I have 2 buddies who installed the other 2 tanks on their rigs and are reasonably happy as well.

I have a 100 with the FR 45 gallon aux tank installed.... MUD thread here:http://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/382545-fr-tank-installed-good-bad-no-ugly.html

I have the same type of gas cap, and while the pressure is a little more than OEM, it's no major issue for me. Further, I thought my mechanic said the system in the 100 had to be closed, or it would throw a CEL - not sure if true or not.

As far as a fuel gauge for the aux tank - I purchased an UltraGauge and use that to keep track of things.

Do you have to have something that is bolt in place?

Why not simply get a fabrication shop to make you one that suits your needs and your truck?
