Best *mid priced* Kinetic Recovery Rope?

Hi all

We like to go camping 4 seasons, and off the beaten path. Want to carry a 30 foot *mid priced* Kinetic Recovery Rope, just in case we get stuck, or come across someone who needs help.

7,000 lb 4x4 truck and about 3,000 lb (wet/loaded) truck camper, so about 10,000 lb total.

My instinct is to go for a mid priced Kinetic Recovery Rope - so nothing crappy that will let me down, but not super high end.

A number of people have suggested Yankum Ropes as a good choice.

Looking around the internets I don’t see any unbiased reviews. Any thoughts on what I should buy?

This is the specific 1” ($214) Yankum they recommended, based on my rig.

thanks

The 1"x30' length of the KRR you linked is $264.

Try ASR. I have one of theirs, it works well, and they're priced competitively.
Your load is within the WLL of their $149 1"x30' KRR.

I have an ASR like @shade links.

ASR regular ropes aren't fancy, white nylon double braid and some Cordura webbing but their prices are basically fair, being about what you'd pay a marine supply to make you a mooring line (which is essentially all these are) splice and whip two eyes (labor) in a length of double braid (material).

If you want to do your own eyes instead figure 1" double braid is typically about $2/ft. Nothing wrong with Bubba but you pay for the name.

That's some expensive rope. 35 years of wheeling with tow straps. I guess I'll continue using regular old tow straps.

Hi Superduty

You might want to read this article. My research indicates that Kinetic recovery ropes are a lot safer. This article explains why.

Thanks for the link. I was just looking at those the other day and it seems like they offer the best value.

Looking at the different sizes they offer, and the recommended vehicle weights, the WLL of 4K on the 3/4" must be a typo, right?

Size / WLL / MTS
1" / 11K / 33.5K http://www.asroffroad.com/1-kinetic-recovery-rope/
7/8" / 9.5K / 28.6K http://www.asroffroad.com/7-8-kinetic-recovery-rope/
3/4" / 4K* / 19K http://www.asroffroad.com/3-4-kinetic-recovery-rope/
5/8" / 4.9K / 14.8K http://www.asroffroad.com/5-8-kinetic-recovery-rope/

*6.3K if following the 3:1 safety factor that ASR seems to be using on the other three ropes.

We have an Xterra that weighs around 5300# loaded (no occupants). I'm thinking the 7/8" would be the safer choice, but the 3/4" could work, assuming that number on the product page is a typo. For our weight, 1" seems like it'd be overkill, and would be hard to get much stretch out of it.

But 1" is only another 10 dollars. The jump to 1 and a quarter is a bigger jump. (Depending on options of course)

I had never heard of Yankum ropes until I started seeing them on the Matt's Recovery youtube videos. I'm not saying they're not good ropes, but I think they're a pretty new company that is jumping in and leveraging the success of those videos, and that's why a number of people have even heard of them.

Looks like the company has only existed for about 10 months:

Curious what others think about this... would you rather go with a company that's been doing this a bit longer?

$150 for 1" x 30' with MBS of 32,000lbs - Might be offshore but it is coated which makes it easier to clean after use which will make it last 4X as long.

I will say one thing Matt uses the Yankum WAY Way Way more than a normal person would

It's not about saving ten bucks. It's about sizing the rope to the weight of the vehicle so that it actually gets some stretch. For my vehicle weight the 1" size is probably too stiff.

I understand but it says in there a 4 door jeep could be either 7/8 or 1", which an Xterra is similar to and it also says you could go up one for environmental factors so I think the 1" is completely valid option.
