Best touring/Long distance seat

Hey all my Pugsley is on its way and I'm already ordering stuff but I can't decide on a seat.

I have on order a Can Creek ST Thudbuster Seat post but want a seat that's not only comfy but can with stand some abuse.

Any thoughts would help.

I've had good luck with Avocet seats..

but the fact of the matter is that it's very personal; I know it's no answer but my advice would be to try as many as you can!

That's a good question. I have a bucket of saddles sitting in my garage that I've tried and didn't work for me. Now saying that on my "touring" bike I run a Brooks B17 aged. I like the standard B17 abit more, but this one works well.

For what it's worth, Bontrager aftermarket seats come w/ a 90 day money back guarantee. They don't work well for me, but I do sell quite a few of them and people aren't so scared of dropping $100- $150 knowing they can return it for money back.

I switched to a Brooks Flyer this season. I ride a hybrid almost exclusively on paved bike trails, 30-44 miles every other day weather permitting. I've found very few negative comments on this saddle. What little there is, I attribute to riders commenting before the saddle is broken in. Initially, I hadn't taken the word saddle for it's literal meaning. It is a 5mm thick piece of hide that takes a bit of their Proofide Leather Dressing and awhile for a amicable relationship to be established.
Due to the weather and school obligations, I've only got about 120 miles on it so far.

Saddle choice is too personalized to offer much more than just vague suggestions. I've known guys who've logged 10,000 touring miles on $20 cheap-o seats, so there's nothing saying you need anyting exotic if you're butt is tough enough.

For bike packing I use a Selle Italia Prolink Gel Flow. Best saddle I've ever owned - period. But, I have almost always used Selle Italia seats.

I agree with Christophe, seats are a very personal choice. I love my WTB Rocket V on my mountain bike but Josh hates it. The Brooks B17 seems to be a popular choice, I've never tried one personally. I did take a ride on a Selle An Atomica a few weeks ago a loved, loved, loved it.

Nashbar usta make an air saddle, I was kinda big but not tooo big, it wasn't as light as a race saddle but was lighter then a gell saddle. It wasn't easy to get the air presure right cause it hade a safty blow off valve that would blow off all the air in it if it got over 8 psi, so one or 2 pumps and no more! But I don't know why I would bother telling you about it cause I cant find it on their web site. And I HATE the thudbuster ST, it's a spring board, you hit a bump, it copresses and inch and on the rebound launches you 10 inches out of the seat! But the faster you go the less it would bounce you, the only time I thought it was worth a damn was when I was on a fire road, for the insane rocks crawling I do on a mountain bike it was awful! Get this instead...

I'm in the same boat. I'm looking at saddles now. Its all about the width of your sit-bones. Bontrager and others have a "butt-measurer" that you sit on and it leaves an impression and then you measure the width to determine your "size".

I wonder if our butts change over time? Saddle brands and models that used to fit don't any more. Also, too much cushion means that the cushion gets pressed toward the center giving more pressure on areas you don't want.

I tried it, it hurt! I replaced it with a ritchey logic, it didnt keep me from sliding forward as well as the bontrager but was lighter and didn't hurt...
I am thinking about getting this for my whole enchilada trip, or my mogollan rim trip...

You are lucky I have been waiting for 2 months on an 18" Puglsey complete. Due in June no less !!!

I have has luck with Specialized seats. They seem to have done loads or research on circulation. Plus my LBS, has a whole rack of try-out seats. Check one out, ..buy it if you like it or bring it back to try another.

I was on the list at my LBS, but a brand new one popped up on ebay the other day. I jumped on it:victory::victory:. I'm so impatient I called the bike shop three times today to see if the bike shipped (not yet :( ).

Many that I know prefer the leather Brooks saddles for long distance touring. They definitely do require some breaking in though. I personally have a Bontrager Racelite SL that I like, but I haven't done too many multiple-day trips.

I did 3 good rides over the labor day weekend and one of them was a 21 miler, and I feel like I could go for another ride and not have any pain or sorriness in THAT region...:roost:
It's not as light as the richy I had before but it is a little bit bigger, still has titanium rails, so I wold consider it light enough to race with:costumed-smiley-007
