Best years

G/Day All,

Just wondering what you guys here in oz would consider to be the best years to look for if chasing a single cab canter or Isuzu 4x4 light truck? something pre computer/electronic I can trouble shoot & fix myself, 2000 to 2005 maybe or just a particular engine model that was good ? Would you go the canter or Isuzu ? looking at buying one in the near future.

Canter 2002 to 2008 FG649 is pre common rail 3.9 turbo intercooled.
Pretty easy to work on.

Precomputer/electronic is around 1998 -2002 ( FG637 ) with a non turbo 4.2 litre engine. Fg649 still has a computer in the injection pump which does give some trouble at times, yes some are precommon rail.
The 4.2 litre engine does need a turbo fitting to it to make it a lot better to drive, that is not a problem. Usually cheaper to buy as they often come up at auction as Rural Fire Service Vehicles.

I think the FG649 (with 4D34 motor) has an engine ECU (computer) which does throttle, measures temperatures and pressure, exhaust retarder, and talks to the computer in the fuel pump (long story somewhere in this forum was an unidentifiable error code from engine ECU which turned out to be the fuel pump computer telling it there was an error in the pump - a trip to Bosch solved it. The engine ecu is accessible through the OBDII port but its proprietary - I rely on blink codes to interpret errors.
