hey guys n gals with bfg at experience (alot of you i believe). i have 45k km (30k miles) on my 33x10.50's, and they are at around 50% tread as compared to my new spare. how much more "effective" life can i expect out of them? is it time to trade in while i can still get a buck for them, or should i drive em right down? please keep in mind winter is coming, and i live in a wet/snowy/mountainous area. thanks for any input.

Let me add on (read: hijack) to this. What is the point where the rubber compound starts to get hard on these tires.

Well I have 2 years off hard usuage on my AT's and they are at the 30 - 40% left! They still do pretty good!

But the prices have shot up like crazy on the BFG's!!! So if you are able to get $$$$$$$$$ do it to help lessen the blow...IMO

I have regularly seen 100,000 (60k miles) on a single set of BFG AT's. They wear very well. I had a set that after 50,000 km were still in the 80% range and the rubber itself was as soft as new.

In the end, if the traction is still satisfactory for what you use the truck for, keep them on for another 20k km.

I'm on my forth set of ATs, I get 50-60K miles from them. The performance falls off before they are completely shot. In PA, we have to have 1/8 of tread, but they don't do well that worn.

I found on the island at around 30-40% the wet weather traction really started to drop off and I hydroplaned more than normal. the best idea is to talk to your tire store and see what they would give you on a trade. if its still pretty good I would switch.

I also found snow traction to really drop off below 50% especially the wet sloppy snow we see around here.

thanks all. i feel i'm at a crossroads, as winter is coming, and safety is important (ovbiously), as well i'm planning a month long backroad trip in the spring and want to have road tested my tires thoroughly before i leave.

chet- i'm seriously considering the cooper stt, and have read alot of reviews, including yours, and would love a straight forward opinion about them as an island daily driver/weekend warrior/month-long-backroad-trip tire...please.:)

keep em coming! thanks again.

I got 52K on my first set and was quite pleased. I kept one as a spare, but the others were shot, pretty bald.

Big difference in the new set from the 52K old set. Ride is smooth as silk. Therefore, the compound must get pretty hard after a while. Just empirical data, though.

You have found someone who will give you a trade in on 50% worn tires? :clapsmile
I'm going to drive all the way to Canada next time I need new ones....:26_7_2:

I love the STT's although on my impossible to align (and stay that way) sidekick they wore funny even with rotating them and are now loud as hell!

but the first 40K went great. they have amazing wet, snow and dirt traction. better than a BFG MT or AT from what I have experienced. They are like a Goodyear MTR but with siping already. the Toyo's are almost identical tread pattern as the Cooper STT's my buddy has 33" Toyo's and side by side the tread is hard to tell apart.

They balanced really good and I have not had a flat even with airing down to 8 psi in the root/rock infested trails we have around here.

If the sidekick was not going almost strictly offroad I would get another larger set in an instant

Same here. I've been through several sets on my previous trucks. Around 50k seemed to be the average, although I'm not sure their off-road performance was all that great after around 30-40k. I like the idea of selling at around 50-60% treadlife. Get some money back while they have some market value, and try out a new/different set. I sold a set of 285/75's (33") this summer that were at around 50% tread depth with some minor cupping for $200. I'd think $200-300 would be reasonable for a good set of BFG's.

thanks chet, good to hear they'll perform well out here, as i'm 90% sure i'll be getting a set. i have to get new rims to get the size i want in the coopers, so i may just keep the bfg's and stock rims for daily driving and long road trips, and save some tread life on the stt's. the toyo's look great, but are pretty dear ($$$), and weigh a fair bit more i believe. cheers.
