BFG KM2 in 255/80x17 on stock offset wheels?

Guys,

was just browsing the BFG site here in Australia as the KM2's have just recently been released here and I noticed that they have a new size....

255/80x17 which equates to 33.3x10x17...Funny, it doesn't show up on the US BFG website listing? Have you guys heard of this size?

My question here is, on a stock offset (+30mm) Prado 17x7.5 wheel, would I be able to fit this combination to a Hilux (same front end geometry as 05+ Tacoma) without the inner sidewall hitting the stock UCA ?

I think it'd be pretty close, but if I could get away with it, I think it would be a great combination.

Thoughts/Opinions/help? Would it look funny on a pickup with a 3" lift, no canopy?

Edit: On a side note, why is it that on the US BFG website it lists the 255/85x16 as a 33.3" overall diamter tyre -

whereas on the Aussie website if you convert the metric size to imperial it works out to be 33.07" ?

I'm not sure if this will help you, but I try.

I run a 285 70 17 winter tire which is wider than a 255, on a stock Tacoma 17" wheel which is a 5"1/2 back space, now I have a Icon UCA and I don't rub and I'm about 1/4" from the inner side wall, but at full steering lock I do rub the UCA in one spot. Nothing major but I do touch it.

I would think that size of 255 width should work for you with a stock UCA on a 17" wheel. Stock Tacoma size for me was 265 65 17. that tire is narrower than that.

So you should be fine.

I would love that size of 255 80 17!!!!

That would be a great size!!!! Maybe someday we will have that size...and then again someday when my truck is done being built we may have the option of the D4D too though....

I know its not a toyota but its the only pics around.

anybody else got some?

Another quick question, with this tyre having a 10" width, when aired down to say 10-12 psi, would that tread widen out to 11" if you included the side wall lugz?

The last information I got was that the pulled the 255/80/17 to create a new mold for the tire. The latest date is late 3Q early 4Q this year on US availability.

I hope this size lives. To me this tire size is the next best thing to a 255/85R16. I'm looking forward to adding it to future trucks that won't take a 16-in. wheel.

This size would be perfect for me as it would allow me to just keep my stock rims. Plus bumping up from a 255/75/17 to a 255/80/17 would give me about another 1".

I think 33.3 is generous, but mine measure a true 33 (give or take ~.2") in the255/85/16 size. In terms of your question on rubbing, I'd say the odds are good that you'll have no rubbing, but that in the 05+ Tacoma world there is enough variability to rule out any guarantees. Mine are mounted on 16x7 toyota steel wheels, and I have no UCA rubbing at all. But they rub in the rear fender wells at full stuff.

In terms of "the look", of course it's subjective. If you're used to running a wider tire it takes some getting used to, but I think it looks good when paired with a utilitarian wheel (like your Jeep picture). The performance (namely on rocks) is excellent.

That is the size I have been hoping for; it would solve a lot of issues on my 04 4Runner over the 285/70/17s I am running now. Thanks for mentioning that it showed up on the Australian site. I just e-mailed BFG to get updated information on the size in the US. I will post any information I get back.

What issues are the 285's causing you? I have played with the idea of going to that size if I can't get the BFG's in 255's.

The 285/70/17s on stock sport wheels run on the upper control arms (mine are Total Chaos UCAs, I'm not sure how bad the rubbing is on the stock arms) and on the frame at full lock. I will try to take a picture and post it tomorrow of where it rubs.

I got a response from BFG. The LT255/80R17 Mud Terrain T/A KM2 tires will be part # 35737 and will be going into production 10/1/2009. Sounds like they will be available in November.

I failed at getting the pictures taken; my meeting ran this afternoon ran into the late evening, well past the picture taking prime. I'll try again for tomorrow.

Interesing. Now I have to decide whether it is better for me to wait and get the 255/80/17's and keep my stock rims, or move up to a 255/85/16 now and get new 16" rims. My main goal with 255's is improved ground clearance and MPG loss as compared to my next choice, a 285.
