Hi all,

Saw this beast last weekend at the Mather campground at the Grand Canyon; they were camped right across from us. I didn't catch what series it was but they said they bought it off a farmer in Colorado I believe. 95' Ford with only 85,700 miles. Quite the setup; didn't get another opportunity to speak to them. thought I would share in this section; sorry if not right section to post.

Looks like an 850.

I believe you'd need a CDL for that thing. Or can you get away without one if it's strictly for private use despite the weight?

Not if a camper. Crazy thing is you can drive a tractor trailer that is towing a camper without cdl. But say you have a class b cdl meaning you can drive say a dump truck, but can't tow over 10,000# without a class a cdl. But I could tow 16k behind my pickup without anything. Crazy *** laws.

You sure about that? Look up your state's DOT requirements for a CDL, you may be unpleasantly surprised. Unless what you pull is a camper trailer, those tend to be exempt from quite a few regs that anything else with potential commercial uses has to follow.

On the question what this truck is, it's no 850 that's for sure - back then they were in the hundreds still (600, 700, etc.), the hundred-fifties (650, 750, etc.) came about much later. This is most likely a 700 based on size alone, altho there are quite a few 600s with the big 10-lug wheels and air brakes - mostly depends on what it was meant to do when it was being ordered, trailer-pullers tend to be 600s and 700s cause of their lower empty weight (leaves more for the trailer), whereas flat beds and such tend to be 800s and 900s cause of the larger frames that can handle heavier loads on the bed. Add to that the fact that with medium-duty trucks swapping axles and suspension is usually just a mag-drill away, and you end up with something that can be pretty much anything :)

Regardless, this one is a DOT bait any way you slice it, may very well be exempt (don't see a # on the doors) but you can bet they still get harassed fairly regularly. Kinda comes with the territory of running a truck so big unfortunately...

If I was going to drive a tank like that it would have a triple slide on it, not a popup!

Either a F700 or F800

And no, no CDL needed regardless of air brakes or actual GVWR.

So long as it is REGISTERED with a max GVWR of less than 26,000, no CDL needed.

Businesses register them for less than actual GVWR all the time so they are not required to hire a CDL driver.

Very common place.

Let me clear this up.

If you have a COMMERCIAL vehicle towing anything with a rating of 10k or more, you are required to have a class A

Your pickup is not a commercial vehicle, so this does not apply.

I like it. They didn't spend a bunch of money building extra Crap it works plus you have a nice deck. Bet you could get 2 bikes or quads back there to explore where it can't go.
