Black pipe nipple diameter for platform legs

In my old 2003 Highlander I made a simple platform out of plywood behind the back seats about 4" or so high and used a cutdown 2 x 6 times 3 for the base, running front to back. For my new (2017) Highlander I'm thinking of doing the same platform type but am looking at using 4" or 5" long black pipe nipples and threaded floor flanges attached to each end of the nipples rather than wood for the base stand. Nothing super heavy will go on the platform so would you recommend 3/4" or 1" diameter nipples as the stand? The plywood platform will be roughly 4' x 4' so maybe 6 legs to hold everything up.

I plan to store some basic camping supplies under the platform, stove, etc. along with fly rods so they'll be somewhat out of site. Thanks for suggestions or perhaps other ideas.

I would imagine that 1/4” or even 1/8” black pipe is more than sufficient to that task. Pick whatever is cheap and easy to find. The OD of the floor flanges will probably drive your decision more than anything else.
