Blew out my sidewall...now what? Help out a noob

I am re-learning to ride a bike...bought a crf450x last year and do a lot of riding here on the reservation in N. AZ after work...looking to move up to a more expo type bike in a year or two...but I am a complete newbie when it comes to the motor variety of bikes so here is my question...
Last week Tuesday I was about 5 miles out Indian Road #something or what and I tear a hole in my sidewall...stock dunlop tires...lucky? because the tire stays on the rim and I am able to limp home very slow...took about 3 hrs...in the dark...sucked...
My question is what should I be carrying for this type of repair. I know the tire needs replacement but is there anything I could do in the field. I have a simple tools kit in a pelican box on the back of the bike but no patch system/air...the size of the tear would have been hard to patch anyway...
What do you guys do in this situation...? Is it just a limp home and replace the tire deal...?
Thanks
Matt

I had the same bike - seperate continent- think desert sharp rocks and thorns

we carried and used HD inner tubes- tire irons- axle nut spanner and a co2 or Mountain bike type pump

We'd usually ride till we found a tree to shelter under then watch and giggle as they changed out the inner tube

I carry a pump because when the CO2 is gone you are done. Also if you can only carry one tube make it a 21" it will work in the rear in a pinch. I do carry a large patch just because it does not take up any room and you never know. To make your tire changing experience more delightful carry a small bottle (1oz) of dish soap, makes a day and night difference in changing a tire.

One more thing, practice changing the tire more then once before you need to do it in the field. Pictures below are from last weekend.

Having everything takes a lot of adventure out of adventure riding but makes for more enjoyable stories later.:bike_rider:

Great thanks...
Do these tires have tubes to begin with or am I just using the tube as a temp fix until a new tire...

If the area is not to large they make boot patchs to go inside to prevent the tube from poking out.. Bicycling we carried dollar bills which we used as they are fibrous and strong to get ya home.

every crf450X I saw had tubes from the factory !

Only not very heavy duty versions

we used copious amounts of slime and changed them for HD versions
