block heater plug mod.

Figured this would be timely since it's getting colder..

I've been having intermittent trouble with my block heater plug tripping the circuit breaker in the garage some nights (seems to be when it's kinda moist outside). My plug has/had some corrosion so I'm thinking that may be the cause. I had a look around the wires to see if there was any more corrosion or frayed bits, but it all looks pretty clean under the sheathing so I'm inclined to blame the plug.
Anyway, after reading some posts on the various Powerstroke boards, it seems to be a common issue... So I did what many others have done and replaced the plug end with a Marinco part. It's part #150-BBI; it was just under $15 on amazon, and it got here in less than 24 hours after I placed my order!!!
I used a 2" hole saw and (after breaking three pilot bits...) cut a nice hole in my front bumper. The wiring is pretty simple, and there are instructions on the package too. It took me all of 20 minutes - easy peasy lemon squeezy. I added a bead of ultra black RTV around the plug to seal it all up.
also, NO MORE DANGLING PLUG!!!!
So far so good, but I'll post an update in a couple/few weeks to be sure. In any case, it's an easy mod that wasn't too expensive nor time-consuming.

And now, your gratuitous pic:

Nice work! I was just thinking of doing something similar on my vehicles. Much better than having the dangling cord. Thanks for the reminder and part #!

P.S. - Wouldn't it be nice if we could get this setup from new? VW is the only manufacturer I know of that does it.

Looks nice!

Consider slapping a little dielectric grease on the connectors to prevent corrosion, etc.
