Camping in Bear Country?

This is the time of year that bears are fattening up for the winter. :chowtime: After three years of living in Alaska and camping around Kodiak Island, I gained a healthy respect for bears of the 1200 pound variety. No matter how good the roof top tent, it aint good 'nuff there unless it's on a double decker bus. And those are very tricky to find a good suspension for. I always had the 10mm Glock at hand to fight my way back to the 12ga Mossberg with Cape Buffalo slugs in 3" Magnums. And I could never be out for more than two nights anyway - that is all I can take without any sleep...

No matter what the keyboard experts :cow: say about the effectiveness of bear spray, I want a tank to sleep in while in bear country. Maybe this is a good idea instead:

What do you think?

I say the more you can do the better. I lost enough sleep camping this weekend and we just have little bears.:gunt:

What's that old joke about ID-ing bear scat by the little bells and it smelling like peppers?

For vehicle based camping I wonder if one couldn't use a std 12VDC powered electric fence power supply?

I don't know if the electrical fence would work on a determined bear or not. Especially up north in brown bear country.

We had a pretty good discussion on bears recently.
I 've no idea either, but I can tell you that I won't be crossing over one again w/o first shorting it out. That was a very memorable high centering, and they do put out about that kind of voltage if not higher.
Might take more than one strand to prevent 'crawl-unders', but that wouldn't be too difficult.

Depending on where, I camp with a .45 super auto, a dog, and/or .338 Winchester mag. I don't like the idea of having to shoot, but I've never needed more than one or two in the ground near where they stand. They don't like the noise anymore than anything else does. Not my idea of ideal, but encroachment and habitat loss, can't be helped I guess. :(

6,000 volts is supposed to do what?

A taser is 50,000 volts. I've seen adult females ride the taser and not go down.

6,000 watts would insure a very pissed off bear I would think. 6,000 isn't crap.

Not that I could post without getting in a bunch of trouble...

(For the record, I went down like a ton of bricks)

I was told that women have less muscle to contract and higher pain tolerances?
