The A 590 IS was announced in January 2008. In September, Canon announced a replacement model. I think that's why the A 590 IS is on sale.
The firmware hack for Canon cameras called CHDK is just about ready for the A 590 IS. CHDK adds a number of features that Canon leaves out, like faster shutter speed and the ability to save your photos in RAW mode rather than JPG. More information here http://chdk.wikia.com
