Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II for a newbie

We have a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II that is about 4 yrs old at work. The marketing Dept. bought it under different leadership and the new people in the department won't use it as it is too much camera for thier needs. They have offered it to me and will get me a list a lenses and prices in the next few days. They probably shot 500 shots with it before it was shelved. So, the question is...Is this way too much camera for a relative newbie to use. I've owned a few 35mm slr's over the years and would like to take a fwe classes on outdoor photography. I have been looking at Nikon D-80's, but this is a much higher end camera that might allow me to grow into photography a little deeper. Any thoughts

It is an astonishing camera, but it is big and heavy. I gave up a 1 series for something much smaller.

Ive shot cameras as heavy and heavier for extended period. Get a nice padded neck strap and you'll get used to it. For field use, you can even go with a belt and strap combo that takes the load off your neck.

Its too good not to try.

You can't possibly learn how to use it. You'd better send it to me.

I may actually meet you up at Waterford on the 28th for your Salt Lake presentation. That is if I can get out of trafic school for dodging a cat(which I thought was a blonde head kid running into the road) and nailing a car. It's been a bad month.

That is a great place to start, just know that it is heavy. At 4 years old it may need a new battery or two (regardless of use). Enjoy it!
