Canon S5 IS Advice

Hey all. I am upgrading my camera. And I seem to like the DSLR series. I'd really like a Rebel XTI, but not willing to pay for it. So I thought this one would be nice....I know it's not a SLR....anyone have any thoughts?

My brother in law uses an S5 and it takes excellent pictures. Image quality is very good through the zoom range and the video it takes is one of the best I've seen on a digi-cam.

I didn't know that it couldn't do RAW though...

I looked at this, but after all of the rave reviews of the G9 I think thats the way I'm going to go.
What are the main differences? I know raw is one. Zoom is another.
The G9 is smaller and easier to carry.

The G9 is built like a tank.

They both have good points.

Size, RAW capture, advanced functions are in favor of the G9.

The S5 has a better grip, and longer zoom.

There are probably differences in image quality and noise reduction also; but I don't know how much difference there really is.

Yeah. The S2 and S3 are smaller than he S5. I don't like it got more bulky. But I still am not sure which way exactly, what I'm going to do. I am considering a Rebel XT, or Nikon D40 but still on the fence.

What is the price different compared to the G9...it looked it was a lot cheaper then I saw compared to the S5

There are some hacks to make the s3/s5 shoot raw.
We have the s3 but the wife wants to run external flash's and such and the s3 doesn't have the hotshoe.

The S5-IS is over $100 cheaper than the G9.

A good lens for the Canon or Nikon DSLR will cost twice as much as either of these smaller cameras.

Oh I didn't realize that. I don't like the way the G9 looks. It looks like just aregular point and shoot, and currently, i have one of those that i paid 350 for.

From the reviews and info I've researched the G9 seems to be the best camera one can buy without taking the leap to a digital SLR. It ma look like a point and shoot, but its the pictures I get that matter to me. I want the adjustability and quality of a dslr, but I want to carry it mountain biking, hiking, dirt biking, and 4wheeling. I really am leaning towards the g9 because of its compact size.

A new G9 is available from Dell for $425, shipping included. Refurbished is available from B&H Photo for $399.

Shipping included, but I thought that somehow it wouldn't have tax. Oh well, still a phenominal deal!! :sombrero:

The G9 was designed to have a look, similar to a Leica Rangefinder.

It looks even more like that, if you install the Lensmate tube. And the "Richard Franiec" grip is a wonderful thing too.
