Caulking Flippac Hinge?

I was cleaning my Flippac after a beach camping trip and noticed rust water running out when I Flipped it open and closed so today I cut out the old caulk and lots of trapped rusty water and rust on the hinges... what have other owners done? There is no access to sand/paint the metal. Thanks!

OK, since I didn't hear back from anyone, here is what I did.

I cut/pulled out the old caulk, masked it off and sprayed it with rust convertor.

How's it look after a day? This is definitely on my "to do sooner than later list". When I bought mine, AT had re caulked it, but I am not sure if they put any inhibitor or oil in there first.

Any idea how often re caulking should be done?

I was thinking yearly - the PO said he did it yearly, but looking at the rust, I am doubting he did it that often. I want to figure out an over coat (latex caulk?) to make it look better. The openings are huge and the silicon was not playing nice with me!

Durring the next re-caulk maybe throw in some Gorrilla glue via syringe. Gorrilla glue will react to any moisture by using it to set up and expand into the cavity. Just a thought.
