CB Radio Check Report (and how about yours?)

I have a Cobra 75 wx st and a Wilson 1000 through-the-roof antenna with a 60" whip. I've never done any real radio checks with it until last night when TEOTWAKI and I played around a bit- me driving and him stationary on his handheld w/ magnet mount antenna. To my amazement, in Orange County suburbia, we got decent transmissions almost 2 miles apart. I've always heard about crummy CB reception, but I thought that this was pretty good considering where we were.

Is this normal? What kind of range do you guys get with your setups, and under what conditions?

I'm using a Midland 5001z with a Firestik 2 4' fiberglass mounted to my left rear corner, and I'm contacting rigs about 5 miles out on the freeways. Have a ground strap from the mount to the body, so I'm sure that's helping.

Kevin and I both had good antennas on the cab of the Broncos. The cab roof is not big enough to provide a great ground plane so I suspect that the pattern is skewed left and right rather than omnidirectional. Behind the cab is the fiberglass shell so the available body metal is more like that of a pickup truck. My truck was stationary N/S while Kevin drove around.
