MERCEDES BENZ turbo diesel conversion for classic range rover , under $ 1500

gentlemen i know many of you would like to have a diesel rover in USA,, i couldn't find one that's way i did my own with GM Detroit 6.2 diesel conversion with 6 speed Dodge viper transmission .witch i LOVE.

however i do understand that many don't have the resources or the mechanical knowledge to do the same . so for that i was thinking to build another classic range rover using engine and transmission and transfer case from pick ur part, that the project will be under 1500 dollar

lets see, how many of you think its impossible? ???????????

i am gonna get on it on Monday try to find used non running classic and get to work ..

its a very easy job , u can do it

I had a FREE 300TD sedan...complete. The 5-cyl. motor even ran well and I decided it would be too expensive.

This will be fun/interesting to watch. Good luck!

Toughest bit will be sourcing a donor MB Diesel that will work with your budget.

I can get that under 300 bucks all day long. The hard part will be finding classic rover to do the job. I found d1 for 650 bucks. If I won't find classic I will do it on d1. it already has lt230

Wouldn't your project be simpler/smoother using a 94/95 D1 with a 5 speed in it? Having discussed use of foreign diesels into Rovers for awhile with a guy here in ROAV I got the impression that mating with the ZF added a layer of complexity (as well as sucking away power from an already anemic setup).

Regardless, interested to follow the project as it progresses. Good luck!

i am going to use the Mercedes transmission as well. and make a short drive shaft that will make it work with lt230 4 wheel drive, i may even try to use the same drive shafts and not change those .

Ah...very cool, will be interested to see how this turns out. Those engines are phenomenal in terms of longevity, had a 300D awhile back and it was solid as they come.

Redrover.... now this seems fun.

After following your thread on your 6.2 conversion with envy I'm interested to see how this turns out.
I'm going to be down in LA in a couple of weeks, mind if I stop by to check out your range rover. I have 3 Range Rover classics and one of them is going to get a diesel some how.

Cheers

Get the D1 and convert it since D1s are more common than RRCs. Echoing Slade, this will be an interesting thread. I'm looking forward to reading it.

I really admire your enthusiasm and can't wait to see this come together. Ya'll know I'm a fan of these engines.
Keep in mind the 123 and 126 body Benz transmissions weren't the most robust in the world. Go easy on the skinny pedal pushing all that weight.

Eric,
I think this is a great project, I love low budget builds. It'll be interesting to see what engineering you come up with.

A question though, has the lt230 ever been divorce mounted? A t/c out of a Samurai might be an option.

Mercedes diesels used to be cheap here in the PNW, but now there's quite a few guys re-powering vehicles with them plus the eco-friendly commuters running WVO grab them up.

Tom.
