Clutch Cargo's gen 2.5

So, after hanging around the forums for a while now, I figured I'd finally start to document my truck's progress. Took me a while to start getting stuff done but now it's finally gaining momentum.

Picked the truck up in October 2015 for $2300. Just over 183,000 miles on the clock, leaked oil from the valve covers, had a cracked windshield, and the 4wd wouldn't engage but I couldn't care less. Mainly because it was completely rust free! Originally purchased in California, it spent almost its entire life in Colorado and Texas before being brought to Connecticut a few months before I bought it. The seller's uncle was the original owner and they both maintained the truck meticulously and kept extensive service records and all the factory literature/window sticker which I was given. Couldn't have asked for a better situation. I had been searching for a montero on and off for at least six months, only coming across Junkers and trucks in fairly rough shape when I spotted the ad on Craigslist for this. After trying the number in the ad and being told the number was out of service every few days for a couple weeks, the listing was taken down. Damn, I missed out. Months later the same ad popped up and I emailed the seller immediately, eventually finding a reply in my junk mail, days later. Come to find out, the seller had taken the ad down after no one had called and then reposted it just recently. After I told him the story of how I tried to get ahold of him he realized the number in the listing was one digit off. I was the only one to ever get ahold of the guy and go see the truck, it was meant to be haha. He even gave me the wind sail that was on top of the truck in the deal and taught me how to set it up.

As I forgot to mention before, the truck came completely loaded. It has the "winter package" and I was super excited that the factory rear air locker still engaged perfectly! The leather was in decent shape and everything seemed to work ok in the interior except for the sunroof which was very slow, something I have yet to take care of. First order of business was to ditch the crappy, miss matched street tires for a set of 31x10.5r15 ******** cepek mud country tires from my mountaineer. The ride wasn't the best but the tires were still fairly new and had great traction and looked a hell of a lot better. As always, I had a matching spair to rotate in too. image.jpeg

Awsome find...and it looks great. Already have history with the Montero just by trying to get it the 1st time...I guess it was meant to be yours.

Unfortunately I was so busy with work to take care of a few issues it had I eventually I dropped it off to my buddy's shop and had him replace all the switches on the transfer case, new valve cover gaskets, plugs and wires, and brakes all the way around. Luckily the previous owner had the timing belt done around 160k so I have some time before I'm due for another one! So far the only time this thing has left me stranded is when the neutral safety switch failed and the truck wouldn't start. Interestingly enough, for my year, the switch listed at o'reilly is for a gen3 and won't work. I had to tell them mine was a 97 and ended up with the right part that way, kinda strange. I bummed around a few trails here and there basically stock for a while and I have to say I was pretty impressed with how capable this thing was with just a good set of tires. I wish I had more pictures. image.jpegimage.jpeg

Few months back just before winter I was supposed to be heading to a gun show in PA late one Friday night. Driver side window regulator bound up and destroyed itself and I also realized I couldn't lay the seat flat to sleep in the truck since half the power driver seat switch stopped working a while before. No parts store open the late so I did my best to rebuild the regulator only to have it fail again instantly. Hey at least I tried. Ended up getting the window closed and fixing it the week after. image.jpg

The driver seat switch turned out better though. Not exactly an easy job and definitely requires a second set of hand to get all the tiny springs back in while snapping the cover on, I was able to take apart the switch and clean up all the contact points. Plenty on little springs and ball bearings to fly out and disappear but I was able to get it back together and the switch worked perfectly afterword. image.jpg

Next up was a battery upgrade since mine was pretty old. After reading a bunch or poor reviews on newer optima units, I decided to go with a good AGM from orielly for a lot less $$. I wanted something that'll do well even when I pick up a winch and set up auxiliary lighting and onboard air

The most recent upgrade was tires once again. I failed to routinely rotate the mud terrains I had on the truck, so by almost 197k, 2 of them were had less than 1/4 tread left and were unevenly worn. Partly because I need a new idler arm and an alignment. I couldn't wait any longer since we were about to get some decent snowfall here in CT so I ordered a set of 33x10.5r15 BF Goodrich KO2 tire from tire rack and had them mounted. Originally I was going to go with a set of the new General Grabber X3 in the same size but they were just too damn heavy to drive around with on mostly pavement without regearing for a while and frequently carrying a bunch of gear and a carload of people. Very happy with the ko2s, the ride was night and day, the traction in snow is incredible, and they are quiet.
