For all you guys out there in the States that have the Weather Channel programmed in to your favorites, wait patiently through the news of killings and drug dealer arrests for your favorite local weatherman to tell you about the next day's weather, or are generally interested in meteorology and climatology, check this study out.

I've been involved with CoCoRaHS since just after Y2K, when it was just a local program with members in Colorado and Wyoming. It was started by the Colorado Climate Center at CSU after a damaging flood hit Fort Collins back in the late 90's as a means to better understand precipitation patterns, and how they drive flash floods. The idea is that folks in the community set up a mini weather station at their home, and measure and report weather-related data on a daily basis. All this data is then compiled by researchers, and used by organizations all over the country that study climatology. It has since grown to over 30 states participating in the program, and has quickly become a nationally recognized source for weather data.

Check out the link, and read about what CoCoRaHS is doing in your area. And if it looks interesting to you, then by all means join up and start capturing and reporting data in your area.
