comparable mpg?

so i was ready through the posts and found myself with a question. i am currently modding/driving a 1995 discovery with a manual transmission. it is lifted 2" running 265 76 bfg mud terrains, i also now have a winch and bumper as well as my roof rack ladder and lights.

my question for anyone who may have insight for me is: what should be a reasonable mpg? i just rolled 100k put in a new clutch changed out trans and t case fluids. yet i am feeling that i am "extra" deprived of the mpg i deserve.

as well how much mpg loss should be expected from certain mods? tires vs extra weight vs. wind resistance items? any and all personal experience imput would be appreciated!!

thank, Brad

Brad,
I have a 96 DI (auto w/142k) with the exact mods you listed, minus the winch. On average my odometer says I get 275 miles to the tank doing city/highway driving. It obviously drops a little when its loaded with people and gear. In reality we get a little more mileage out of the tank than the odometer says due to larger tires. Overall, 12-13 mpg.

97 SD 10-12 MPG of course it has a 5.0L and I drive it that way.
97 XD TD5: Without roof rack 28MPG, with roof rack 25. 265's, 4.11 gears, big bumpers and a winch up front.
D110 300Tdi without roof rack 25 MPG with roof rack and tent just under 20 (Highway speeds)
Ditch the roof rack if you don't use it.

Similar number for me too, the only difference I see is that I'm running 4.10's and 235/85's.

Similar numbers until it gets cold outside....then I quit figuring mpg...as it's in the single digits around town anyway :(

The weather in MI can't be any better than here in IA.

My '97 has front & rear bumpers, 2" lift running 235/85 A/T tires plus a roof rack. I get about 13-15mpg (depending on type of driving). I'm actually amazed how much better the mileage on my fully equipped DI compares to my stock DII. The DII gets 15mpg on a good day.

mpg

thanks for all the imput guys, i guess that helps a little. i find myself fairly consistant with the miles per tank around 265-270, figures out to be roughley 12.? mpg most tanks not taking in to account the tire size difference. i am thinking of switching to a 325 or 255 85 tire in an all terrain, realistically i don't think i'm going to see much improvement though. as for the rack i do use it, often. rtt setup for camping and carry kayaks etc alot. guess i'll just quit whining, i just wanted to be sure i am running as i should.

thanks again everybody and feel free to add more!

I'm guessing with the 255's you'll lose another mpg. They are a heavy tire. With the all-terrain's it may not make much difference over your mudders.

My v8 didn't do very well at all. The diesel is great on mileage. Did you put a floor on your rack? Guys on d-web said the floor seems to help with the mileage.

floor on rack

i have not as of yet but did give it some though before, hearing that comment i may think about it again. what do most use for a decking on the rack? can't say i have anything around the house that'll work right now but any ideas would be great toward that topic as well. i usually do a partial removable floor for when i have the tent mounted on the rack, so when you step out there is a 2 foot deck to stand and move before climbing down the ladder. i use just a piece of plywood for that but i don't know how well that will weather over time. feel free to use my thread to share your mods i can always use other good ideas or they may spark interest for other spin offs. thanks again all.

On the roofrack, a lot of guys are using the chicken flooring. It works well, but Timmy!!!!!!!! used it, and it left "waffle board" marks on his roof!:Wow1:

There are all kinds of lightweight, but really durable plastics out there. HDPE is good stuff, and you can get it in sheets. Starlight XL (I think it's xl) has some stuff. Pretty spendy, but good and durable.

It sure is nice to have the decking up there.

200tdi disco with roof rack, 2" lift, 235,85,16 mud tires, plus winch etc etc. i'm getting 32-35mpg :wings: oh yeah forgot to say i got that fully loaded (4 kids wife and dog) with caravan on back :Wow1:
I do like the V8 but with fuel prices over here it's got to be the diesel...
