Conqueror Conquest braking and wheel size

Hi all:

Braking:
I'm getting close to getting a Conquest. I've been reading other threads about concerns with lack of braking systems but the Conquest I am looking at has a Trailco Sigma auto reverse coupler braking system. I understood that this was a standard feature but perhaps it is not. Maybe the Conquest has it and the Compact does not.

Wheels:
I'd like to use just one common wheel size on truck and trailer. The standard rubber on the Conquest is 30" (I think). Has anyone gone significantly bigger and if so what is the limit. My truck tires are 37x12.50R16.5 with an 8 bolt lug pattern. Obviously I would have to change the hubs but will such big tires fit in the wheel wells?

I'm looking forward to your comments.

Me again:

I read more and got answers to the braking question. I guess that when you drive in reverse, the auto braking is disabled?

Still interested in wheel sizes

It's a metric axle so switching the bolt pattern to an 8 lug would be almost impossible, you'd do better with a set of adapters. Even with US made axles the 8 lug patterns are only start to become available for 5000 lb axles and need a larger cross member.

The only way I can think you might be able to 37" fit tires on is by using shackles. But even then it's pushing it, there may not be room in the wheel well.

Shackles can be problematic as they produce instability and sway.

Thanks Martyn:

The Conqueror website shows drawings of the Conquest but it is not possible without seeing one for real to determine how much room there is in the wheel well.

Vertical travel of a bigger wheel in the wheel well is also possibly a problem although there looks to be lots of room from the pictures.

Another problem, made worse if shackles are used, is that the tent may nor reach the ground! Going from 30" to 37" is only going to result in an extra 3.5" in trailer height which may be OK.

There is also the issue of tire width; the wheel well may simply be too narrow for my 12.5" width.

Hi Jeff:

I found a relatively new used one for sale in as-new condition complete with tent, axe, spade, grass slasher, power pack, lights and battery for CAN$9,200.

The owner also has a bunch of other accessories. I plan to see it next month when he gets back from his travels.

I think size wise you would have to do some mods to fit that big of a tire ?

would have answered sooner but have been on the road :)
