Considering 1995 Land Cruiser

I'm going to look at '95 TLC that has a 153,000 miles and asking price of $5,500. My knowledge of TLC's is limited to my Dad's FJ40 when I was a young buck.

What should I be on the look out for? Any thoughts/comments are appreciated.

Also, I understand some came locking differentials and a center lock. Are these switch activated and if so where are the switches located?

Thanks,

The Slee 80school is an awesome resource, your best guide for sure. The looker dial/switch is located left of the steering wheel, round dial if you have them and a blank square if not. Service records are the most important thing when looking at high mileage rigs, and rust will be relevant to your geographical location. Good look with the hunt!:sombrero:

Windshield frame definely needs some work...looks like montana from the pics. I would try to find one without rust, but that rust appears fixable. Look for more rust around the rear window/rear hatch as well. It appears to not have lockers, but I can't tell for sure. If that is snow induced rust, it shouldn't be that bad--you may be able to get a good deal and 150k is not high mileage at all... Good luck

Truck looks nice minus the rust. If it has lockers in the specified location (listed above) then that price might not be bad. Take a look at the radiator and engine for visible leaks/corrosion and the front axles will likely need a rebuild (lots of grease build-up on the birfs).

Check the normal things like leaking birfields and clicking birfields when you turn. Also, take off the oil filler cap looking for any moisture on it as well as inspecting the coolant overflow bottle while the truck is running. Make sure no bubbles in the overflow. These trucks are bullet proof with the exception of a blown headgasket if it's allowed to run hot.

Keep an eye out in the SW for one where it's dry and you can find one with very little rust.

Not sure where you are, but there is a nice looking white 95 with lockers in Denver. Dealer (Emich chevrolet) is asking $5990. I've only seen pictures, but it looks decent.

Thanks Geof for the lead. I'm in eastern Idaho, but willing to travel for the right TLC.

Where at? I'm in Idaho Falls. Have you checked on ksl.com? I ended up buying mine out of Sacramento, keep looking you will find the right one.

No problem. That one was high on my list until I found an LX450 in Albuquerque with lockers (and reasonably cheap.). The Denver one looked nice, but a little distant for me.
