Considering a G wagen

I've been a member for a few years. Joined when I was looking for a Montero SR and eventually bought a 97 SR thanks to what I learned on this board. I'm looking for somthing a little different and have always liked the look of the G wagens. I found a Europa G500 listed as a 2000 on ebay. I don't need to buy anything quick but looking for advice on years and if that particular year is good. Thanks.

PS I've read some of the other posts before I posted this.

Welcome to the portal. I have had several rigs over the years and I am a regular on the Mitsubishi forum. I have had a couple of 1996 LX450's, 1991 Montero, 2000 Montero and a 2003 G500. I have loved them all and they all have there strengths and weaknesses. The thing I loved about my Gen I Montero was the look. Boxy is beautiful. It was light weight and easy to drive, but it would make my back sore on long drives. The LX450's were great offroad but legroom in the rear seat was non existent. They were gutless when it cam to power and they got terrible MPG. The 2000 Montero was a good compromise. Because of the rear locker it had solid offroad capability. It was also the most reliable and comfortable to drive of the bunch not to mention it return excellent fuel economy. The G500 is whole different animal than these other vehicles. It feels like a tank. It is as offroad capable as the LX450. While the G500 is heavy, the engine does a good job of moving the vehicle. The engine and the transmission are silky smooth. Even more silky smooth than the Montero and the Montero has a great tranny. The G500 is much more expensive to operate than the Montero, but both can be repaired in the front yard with a little know how.

Personally I like the 2002+ better the older imported vehicles because of the upgraded interior. Even tho I have not had issues with my 2003 G500, I would recommend going with a 2004-2005 Model year because they seem to have fewer electrical issues from what others report. The imported vehicles may be more difficult to finance. Even the 2002+ G500's are difficult to finance because they were never listed in the financial lenders NADA website. We can see NADA values as a consumer but the lenders cannot input a vin and get a value. They have to get a value by going through the consumer side of things and many lenders are not comfortable with this. It's really weird.

I've read about the reservations concerning the G wagen repairs. I've owned an Audi A6 4.2 for about 90k miles. Its had its ups and downs and I've learned to deal with the expense of owning a German luxury sports sedan. I think it is similar for the G wagens. I can deal with the Audi's "issues" because it is an awesome car. I agree with your view on Monteros, my 97 SR has been very inexpensive to own and operate. The parts are very reasonable and it has been very reliable. I've put about 30K on it, dead on the about the transimision, it is very nice.

Here is a pic of my SR.

The reason I think the G500 is more expensive to operate because of the initial buy in price, mpg, and premiums for parts/repairs. My insurance cost is nearly identical from my 2000 Montero to 2003 G500. I only have to change the every 10K miles on the G500 which save me some money when compared to the Montero. The car payment will be much larger than a Montero but it could turn out to be a good investment. I don't foresee the 2002+ G500's dropping below $20K in the next 10 years. They are much like the Toyota FJ80 Landcruisers, they will retain their value and possibly increase in value. I get a free rental car when I have repairs done at the dealer which is awesome. Last time I got a free rental car for a whole day because the mechanics were out to lunch when I took it in for an oil change. They just had me pick it up the next day. Mercedes service is second to none. I have had a few repairs but all of my repairs have been part of bringing the vehicle back to immaculate condition. I could hear the A/C hissing so it needed to be recharged. For a receiver dryer and a recharge it was about $600. Not too bad, in my opinion. Most report MPG's in the 13-14mpg range. I get between 15-19mpg but I think I am a rare case.

From my experience there are just a few trouble spots on the G500. They are listed below:

Tcase acuator
Window regulator motor
Front door pockets

Because all 3 of these issues can be resolved by going with an older imported G500/G320, many die hards look for the older G-wagons. Like I said, I like having the luxury like the heated steering wheel, heated seats front and rear, front and rear lockers (not all imported Gwagons had the front locker option), better dealer support, and more safety features.

No matter what you choose you can't go wrong. I have really enjoyed mine and it has been trouble free in my opinion. After all it is a 10 year old vehicle. My 10 year old Landcruisers were much less reliable.

Personally, I would take a properly maintained 2000 G500 over any of the 2002+ year models. There is more room inside, as the upgraded interior of the 2002+'s takes up space that can be better used by the driver and passengers. The manual Transfer Case shift lever is far preferable over the prone to fail electric TC shifter. There are fewer electronic nannies on the 2000, which is my preference, too.

The 2000 G500 you mentioned on Ebay no longer shows up, so I can't give you an opinion on it one way or the other.

Been driving a G since 1984, and love 'em.
