Cooler lids

I've noticed that a good many cooler lids I've checked out are not insulated and don't seal well. This seems pretty rediculous to me. I really want a smallish (20-30qt) cooler that is well made for under $60.

Am I just looking in the wrong places or is this a sales/marketing strategy by the mfg's?

Is it really that big of a stretch to take a basic cooler and "upgrade" it? Has anyone done this?

I added an Igloo latch to my ice chest to make it seal better. It was an old latch I had but you can buy Igloo parts and add one yourself for under $5.00

Most cooler lids have a hole w/ a plastic cap/plug that you can remove to access the inside of the lid. With a bit of creativity and expanding foam insulation (found in most hardware stores) you can insulate the lids yourself. Just be sure you get the foam into the corners and not just the middle of the lid.

Then simply seal the hole back up using the cover.

Oh crap, that's a GREAT idea!! :victory:

So insulate the lid, add a rubber seal and some snap latches and I think the insulating properties of almost any decent cooler can be increased very much.

Time to do some experimenting....

When you do this, be sure to use the door and window foam as it expands less and won't bulge the lid as much.
