Custom seat mount question

The previous seat mounts I built for my Patrol were made of steel and way overkilled. I'm thinking of doing the ones for my Ambo out of aluminum.

Is this a bad idea?

Depends on how you do it really. Personally, I probably wouldn't use it for seat mounts because (likely) the only advantage Aluminum would have in that application is weight and I'd argue that it wouldn't be a significant enough difference to justify the added cost and difficulty in fabrication. It isn't the easiest material to weld and weld well. Steel on the other hand is cheap, easy to weld and can be made light weight with some clever designs.

Shocker

VanDOOM!
Also, I don't think I have ever seen an aluminum slider mount. The only aluminum mounts I have see are for fixed back seats like the Kirkey etc.

Thanks guys,

I've looked into this a bit further today. I was surprised each mounting points (where the base bolts to the floor) isn't the same height at all corners. I'm ditching the aluminum idea and can either start from scratch or use part of the existing base. After leaving clearance for the doghouse removal I'm planning for 32" track length maximum including some small storage underneath.

Thanks again :)
