B&H has the D700 at a really low $2319 right now! The price drops once you place it in your cart, and there's free shipping as well. Not sure how long this deal will last but I thought I'd share while the getting is good. Damn good deal which was too good for me to pass up.:wings:

If history is our guide, once B&H starts lowering the price on their higher end cameras, something is in the works, and is generally within 30-60 days of release.

The D700 is a great camera for sure, and that price would be very tempting indeed.

EDIT: Can you send me some RAW files from that camera once you get it and start shooting? I'm curious...

I was thinking that, you'd know better than I though. WPPI is next month and Nikon reserved the grand arena at the MGM for some "BIG" announcement. I was initially thinking MX format intro, which would way out of my price range, but could it be a D700x? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

...and yeah, I'll get you a few files from the camera ASAP.

I'm betting and hoping for the 700x and HD video that Canon (and the D90) already has.

I was thinking this very same thing as well, when I noticed last month that the price on this model started to drop.

Keep hearing rumors of Nikon introducing "something big" around the corner. I have had the D300 for over a year now and its a great camera. I am not worthy of all its features however I tend to use equipment like this, as a hobbyist, out in the elements which was the main reason I "pushed" up to the D300 instead of the D80: For its better seals, construction, etc.

However I am intrigued by a full format sensor and lenses ala my former 35mm Nikons. I would have been a serious customer candidate for the D700 if Nikon would have incorporated HD video into it. Not as a replacement to a dedicated HD vid set up but for the casual vids I want to take while at the beach with the grandkids, putting one of my fellow overlander's moves in the rocks to stream, etc. and not wanting two cameras dangling from my neck. IMO Nikon missed an opportunity with the D700...

I suspect they will be incorporating HD video into their camera line...they have to to keep up with Canon!

I would like to see these too. In the next few months I must upgrade to a better camera and I was thinking of getting the D700 since the D3 is out of my price range at the moment.

No problem Phil.

Here's a bump, as prices on the D700 look to be moving north again. Canada, UK, and other markets have already begun to see the increase. Here is a letter Nikon Australia sent to their dealers.

Dear Nikon partner,

Nikon has experienced an amazing year of growth. New levels of exposure for the Nikon brand has been achieved through activities such as the Nikon INDY 300, Westfield promotions and continued advertising and consumer promotions. This combined with amazing new products has been driving consumers into your stores and has ensured Nikon’s ongoing health in the Australian market.

Nikon has continued this strong success despite the challenges facing businesses in the current financial climate. The nature of these market challenges has meant that costs have significantly increased and accordingly there is a need to review the current prices available from Nikon Australia on many products.

However, in recognition of the growth being achieved we have decided to postpone the increases until February 1st, 2009. The proposed February price list and summary of changes is supplied with this letter.

Nikon is committed to ensuring the momentum continues. To help achieve this, the current supply price on all existing backorders placed before February 1st will be honoured by Nikon until March 31st, 2009. Any existing backorder will maintain its price in our system and new orders that we cannot immediately supply will be backordered at current price. After this date all issued products and backorders will be converted to the new price structure.

If you do not wish for these items to be supplied at the higher price you will need to change the orders prior to them being shipped after April 1st, 2009. Due to an expected increase in demand Nikon Australia cannot guarantee supply of all items prior to April 1st, 2009. We will of course endeavuor to supply all backorders as soon as possible.

I encourage you to take advantage of this chance to give outstanding value to consumers across the Nikon range and capitalise on future profit opportunities.

If you have any questions about this revision or wish to place an order at this month’s prices please contact your account manager.

Thank you for your support in 2008. We look forward to supporting you during this all important period and throughout 2009.

Regards
Nikon Australia

The "big" news from Nikon for the WPPI show turns out to be nothing more than a free Blues Traveler concert for those attending the show. Also, by the sounds of it the only thing we're going to see at PMA from Nikon is perhaps an update to the D40/60. The D700x or whatever they call it doesn't look to be on the immediate horizon, perhaps year end or early 2010. I suspect with the economic down turn things will slow a bit in the next year for all the camera makers, which is fine by me. Releasing new models that seemingly dwarf each other ever few months has been a bit over-enthusiastic IMO.

So as of now, and at least for the next 6 months or so I'm guessing the $2319price for the D700 will be as good as it gets. I don't see Nikon raising prices on cameras like the D700, if they have replacement product ready to be announced.
