Just got the Xterra, down sized from an Yukon XL....that was a money pit.

In a few months hope to hit Big Bend trails.

Looks like a great time with the boy. You'll enjoy the Xterra, looks like it will suite your lifestyle well.

You'll love the x. But if you can go without them, I'd take the running boards off. Increases your ground clearance a good bit, and they don't do much to stop damage (unlike true sliders). Any plans for modifications?

That's funny about the running boards, that was the first thing my wife said i could NOT do. She is short, when we go to Big Bend i will just remove them for the weekend.

Will be doing rust proof & under body spray, as it is no rust at all.
Hoping to get lucky at Junk yards for: body armor & any other goodies i can find.
Need to beef up leaf springs, towed a trailer loaded w/4 boy scouts it was sagging, power was no problem at all.

I love the plastic, a shrimp fell out after our fishing trip and the X got stinky. No big deal w/plastic Clorox wipe & it's all good.

Check online listings as well - I was able to find a full set of the Pro4X skids less than 2 hours away for $60 on Craigslist to put on my SV model Frontier. I know they're not bombproof armor but for my use they were a deal.
