Dead reckoning, guts, or a cute little GPS?

Regarding pre-GPS navigation, I love this quote:
"For centuries, the only way to navigate was to look at the position of the sun and stars and use dead reckoning." - The Global Positing System: The Role of Atomic Clocks

I just wrote up my installation and evaluation of my nav "system" in the Jeep. After going through a different set-up, I'm now rather pleased with the Garmin GPSMap 76S on a RAM ball joint mount. Read it. I hope you enjoy it. I learned some fascinating things about GPS history and "how it all works." Did you know that the military first used the GPS in the Gulf War of 1991, although the 24th satellite wasn't launched until 1993?

Where am I? Where am I going? Alas! These questions are answered with a little device called the GPS receiver. However, the age-old question of Who am I? remains wholly unanswered, but each trip helps put that puzzle together one mile at a time.

With absolutely no reason to kiss your keester, I must say this review has merit.

I really like the template you're using for your product reviews. Easy on the eyes. Informative review, concise and succinct. Good trivia mixed with relevant info.

Nicely done -

Does the drilling your dash not bother you at all? I prefer the windshield mounts. The Jeep dash looks like it is made for the Ram mount though. Looks good.

Hilarious - considering you're anti-GPS. Although I understand why. One can get so hooked on gadgets and equipment that the whole being on the road concept and inner guide gets snuffed out. After wrting that thing up, some voice was telling me to shut up and go do something that helps set the feet aright, and the heart apounding.

I understand. Since the place I drilled the holes gets covered by a little rubber mat, I didn't think twice about it. That glove-like fit trumped it all, anyway. Plus, uh........three little 3/16" holes? Did you notice the snorkel that uses a 3" hole in the sheet metal? :snorkel:
